I'm going to Toronto for the first time this month! What should I do?
Several weeks ago I posted a thread asking about the best American city to move to but then I started researching Toronto and I'm in virtual love with it. My husband and I are going to go visit in a couple of weeks and although I already have a ton of stuff I want to see, I was hoping to get advice from DUers who have been there or who live there.

For anyone who knows, my husband is curious about the snow skiing. Any good?

I'm so excited!!! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

1. Henry Moore Museum
Queen Street. Great restaurants.

It's been a while for me, but I have always loved Toronto. Hope you have a great time!

16. I'll probably do it but....
the elevator ride is going to freak me out. Being stuck in a small box hanging on a rope that high is just creepy.

6. Actually, how about someone like me who loves great live music
mainly in the rock/alternative/blues style

I'm probably also going to be in Toronto this year!

9. I'm a foodie but I'm not a huge music person
I take the live music here in Austin for granted and don't really listen to much of it. When I go out, I prefer to either socialize with my friends without screaming in their ear or dance at a club. When listening to live music, it's usually jazz or blues.

Food. I love just about anything that isn't greasy. When on vacation, I think the experience is just as important as the food so an offbeat fun restaurant would be far more memorable then, say, a HardRock Cafe. From what I've researched, Toronto is going to be a wonderful place for good food.

4. The Boardwalk
Just walk along the shore of that big ass lake. We really enjoyed hanging out at the Docks, a giant outdoor bar, might be more fun in June rather than February though. I second the CVN Tower, worth the price for a one of a kind view.

5. YOUNGE STREET!
There's a rainbow in Toronto where the maritimers are bold
They always get a potfull-but they never get a pot of gold
Chorus:
But they're to it and at it at it and to it-
Ya gotta tune your attitude in
If ya don't get at it when ya get to it -
Ya won't get to it to get at it againx2
A guy from old New Brunswick He couldn't even pay his rent
We don't know how he travelled But we all know where he went
He was-
Chorus:
A girl from old spud Island-Old Potato lips
She married a Newfoundlander and they lived on Fish and Chips
But they were-
Chorus:
A guy from Nova Scotia, He can't afford the train-
He's sittin on a streetcar, but he's eastbound just the same
He's-
Chorus:
A Frenchman from the Gaspe said "Frogs don't like smog!"
So he hopped in a swamp of lilies where he lives in a hollow log...
But he's-
Chorus:
A guy from old Cape Breton, so lonesome he got stoned
He crawled into a suitcase, and somebody mailed him home.
But he's-
Chorus:Repeat, end

If you get this reference, you get a big ass cookie.

8. Casa Loma
Younge street for sure, the waterfront,

This year there isn't much snow so I don't know where you'd go to ski, certainly not in Toronto proper. You'd have to go north, or west to Milton or further west to Chicopee there are ski clubs both places, Blue Mountain Collingwood is another ski area. Each is only about an hour to an hour and a half away from Toronto. You must visit all the ethnic areas, like China Town, Greek Town etc ..

I LOVE Toronto!! Fabulous theatre there too!

12. The ethnic areas are what I'm most excited about!
and I read that Toronto is second to only NYC when it comes to theatre in North America...pretty cool.

As for the skiing, we won't have time to do it on this trip but if we do move there then hopefully there will be better winters for it. We looked on the Blue Mountain site and it looks great but apparently they're having a very wet winter this year. I assume that's not a good thing.

Are the ethnic areas spread out or are they somewhat close to one another? I need to start studying a map of the area to get an idea of the layout.

I'm originally from Ontario, about an hour from Toronto. There isn't much snow at all.

try this site for a feel of where things are.

20. You're very welcome
we're going to Toronto over July 4th week and hope to take in some sites too. One of my favourite places is Stage West Dinner Theatre in Mississauga on Dixie Road. You can go for just theatre or, spend the night in a suite / room at a very reasonable price. Their gourmet buffet dinner/theatre is awesome.

30. that is so weird
so looking at that bottom picture, there seems to be several milk bags that come in a package. and you have to also have the containers to put the bag in? isn't this ultimately more wasteful?

31. The blue container is reusable
You buy 4 litres (1 gallon) of milk, but only open it one litre at a time. The milk comes in a bag that is about as think as a heavy-duty zip-lock bag. It cuts down on garbage.

34. well, no...
IIRC, the bags come in a 3-pack. The jugs are sold separately, but last forever. The only packaging is the bags.

I don't really remember, because the dairies in BC don't do milk bags. They just do traditional cartons. As late as five years ago, they still did glass bottles! Alas, no more.

11. Queen St. West!
Fine Dining: Movenpick in Yorkville (just off Bay St).

Royal Ontario Museum.

Hig Tea at the St. Martin Hotel.

Ontario Science Centre (actually in the Don Mills suburb, but worth the trip).

Harbourfront.

Skiing? Not really. Blue Mountain is the closest resort. But being spoiled by the Rocky Mountains, I can't consider anything in Onatrio as more than a "bump".

22. I haven't been there since I was a kid, but the OSC was awesome then
In the 70s. I assume it's even better, now. I always preferred it to Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry, although that one is good, too.
I haven't been to Toronto in years. Castle Loma was cool when I saw it, and you should never miss the Hockey Hall of Fame!

Is Ed's Warehouse still around? I had one of the best meals ever there in the mid-70s when my parents took us there. That was so long ago, we stayed in a Howard Johnson hotel!

It's the tallest structure in the world. And the view is spectacular. :-)

There's also a restaurant up there.

29. I don't know why everybody's so excited about Yonge street
I live right near there and it's nothing to write home about. The Royal Ontario Museum is really cool, but they're doing a big add-on and right now things there are kind of disorganized. But, if you go after 4:30 on Friday, it's free.

Right next door to that is the University, where I live. Walking around there is also free and the University has some really nice grounds and cool architecture if you want to check that out.

Yorkville, just across Bloor St. is also a cool place, if somewhat expensive.

If you're into shopping, there are some expansive underground shopping malls in downtown T.O. and there's also the Eaton Centre.

  1. It contains incredible amounts of fat, and anything with that much fat must taste good.

  2. It's from Canada, which pisses off conservatives, because Canada is our enemy.

  3. It's from French Canada, which pisses off conservatives even more.

  4. Did I mention that it has tons of fat?
