What's up with this Bode Miller guy. Was he really that good, a strong
contender for multiple gold going into the Olympics, or was it all just hype because America loves a boozehound party animal?

I mean, trying to leave out the hindsight now that he's tanking it, was he really good to warrant the hype beforehand?

1. Apparently not...

He has yet to score a single medal, and he's been through five out of six events so far.

If he fails to grab at least a bronze in his final event, he'll be lucky if he gets a contract to advertise a diaper recycling service.

4. I mean there have been examples of guys who have been hyped to death,
but delivered all or most of the goods. Spitz. Heiden. Michael Johnson. Carl Lewis. Michael Phelps. Tomba.

I don't follow Winter Olympics closely at all. I just wondered what this guy was actually projected to do, best and worst case scenario... He's certainly at or below any worst case scenario...

As far as him not giving a crap, I don't hold with the winning is the only thing ethos, but the whole point of competing in the Olympics is to try your best and to try and represent and win for the country. Not putting forth best effort doesn't seem consistent with that.

I mean, if someone doesn't give a damn, why not make way for someone who does?

3. Sure he was.
He had a ridiculously good 2005 and everyone expected that he would continue that streak though the olympics. He won the Overall and Super G World Cup titles in 2005. He won gold medals in the Downhill and Super G at the 2005 World Championships in Bornio. Prior to that, he had won gold medals in the combined and giant slalom at the 2003 world championships in St. Moritz, amongst other things.

But one of his well-known traits is his all-or-nothing style. He's been known to mess up.

This is my take.....you can't win all the time.

6. And the YOOO ESSSS AYYYY always underestimates the competitors
We DID sort of "invent" some of the snowboarding, and trick skiing events, but the other countries have talented young people too...and they actually might have some governmental help with time off to practice, and financial support while doing the practicing..
