can someone explain to me what Jaycees does?
A friend of mine is involved with them and they seem to have a lot of picnics and go to ballgames. Why exactly does Jaycees exist? What do they stand for and do?

1. 'Leadership Training Through Community Service'
That's the sig.

Jaycees — the Junior Chamber of Commerce — exists to give people too young and/or not sufficiently upscale for Rotary something to do. It's actually kind of a Rotary Lite.

I was a Jaycee for 10 years, and apart from developing an innate knack for public speaking, I really don't know what I got out of it.

If you want specifics I'll give you a few, but I ain't gonna volunteer 'em because it'd probably just bore most people.

3. "an innate knack for public speaking"
That's a valuable asset. How does it compare to Toastmasters?

4. Toastmasters is only about public speaking
In Jaycees, it's just part of the program — a very small part, at that. You get "points" for making speeches and they have competitions, but there's not much in the way of instruction.

2. And what is the proper grammar?
Edited on Fri Feb-24-06 06:11 PM by skygazer
Is it "Jaycees does" or "Jaycees do"? I'm not making fun of you - I'm really not sure. Neither of them sound right and the more I say them, the stranger "Jaycees" sounds.

My dad belonged to a couple of those "fraternal" organizations - the Lion's Club and the Eagle, or the Elks or one of the other large deerlike creatures. I was never sure what they did - sit around and drink mostly, it seemed like. That's definitely what Shriners do when they're not dressing up in strange costumes and marching in parades.

5. Depends on whether you're speaking of the organization
or its members.
