I stubbed my toe (left foot) over a week ago...
...and it's still swollen and really painful. I've been walking with a limp for eight days now.

Did I fracture it, maybe???

1. Over a week ago..
and it's still swollen and painful? Yep.. definitely sounds like you fractured it. I did the same thing a couple years ago. Any discoloration?

2. Nope. There was a little bit a day or so after wards.
Currently, it's a big, flesh-coloured sausage. It still hurts when I move it around, and walking is kind of a chore.

9. They really can't do much if it's broken
....but they can help if you've dislocated the joint. In any case, they can provide an ortho shoe which may make walking a little more comfortable. In any case, an Xray is required to distinguish a fracture from a dislocation. In either case, they'll give you some pain medicine so that you can accomplish your daily activities around the house a little easier.

It will heal, eventually. After all, nothing lasts forever. It just feels like it does.

5. Hmm..
Should probably get some xrays, then. If I remember right, all they told me was to try to stay off it as much as possible, and to wear open-toed sandals to keep pressure off it. They also suggested taping it to the toe next to it. Generally, I don't think there's too much they can do with a broken toe, but, if it isn't going to set right, that could cause some problems.

3. I broke my toe next to my pinky toe a couple of years ago...
Sounds just like what's going on with you. YOu need to see an bone doc and get your toes taped, and then you will wear a funny looking boot for several weeks.

Better take care of it :-)

6. Yep, that's my toe. The one next to the pinky.
I've never broken a bone in my body in my entire life up until now if this is the case. BTW, Could I get the toe taped and just wear my sock over it???

7. The break may be inside your foot, in the bone proximal to you
actual toe bone. That is the one that usually breaks because it is a longer thinner bone. If this is the case, you really need to get to the osteo doc because if he doesn't tape it back into place, using the two closest toes as braces, then it may not heal right.

And if it doesn't heal right, it could affect your walking for the rest of your life.

Get on to the doc, get your toe taped, get the funky boot, and then take the pain meds and lay up for several days, OK?

You are going to go to the doc, right? :-)

8. Here is an x-ray of a foot...

see the bone just down from the long bone in the foot? That is the one that broke on me, and I would bet a hundred bucks that it is either that shorter bone, or tie distal end of the long bone that you broke. This is where your foot flexes when you walk so please get it seen to.

13. If you didn't go to the dr. then how do you know that you broke it?
And you may be ok now, but when you get older, if the bones didn't set straight, you may catch hell from it.

I hope not, though :-)

14. Done it a zillion times...
I am the Queen of broken toes -- I stopped counting after ten or so times. Baby toe and the next one in are my vulnerable spots.

Sounds like a good break you have going there -- it the majority of the pain/swelling is near the 1st joint and not near where the toe attaches to the foot you are probably going to be told to put a bit of cotton between that toe and it's nextdoor neighbor and then tape them together. Not much else to be done.

With it properly taped I'm been able to dance in high heels, go to a boat show, and stand on my feet for 14 hours for a commercial. Now, I'm not recommending that you DO something wacky after a break, but if you have to, it can be done.
