Dedicated to Kirby Puckett!
Well, beat the drum and hold the phone - the sun came out today!
We’re born again, there’s new grass on the field.
A-roundin’ third, and headed for home, it’s a brown-eyed handsome man;
Anyone can understand the way I feel.

Chorus:
Oh, put me in, coach - I’m ready to play today;
Put me in, coach - I’m ready to play today;
Look at me, I can be centerfield.

Well, I spent some time in the mudville nine, watchin’ it from the bench;
You know I took some lumps when the mighty casey struck out.
So say hey willie, tell ty cobb and joe dimaggio;
Don’t say it ain’t so, you know the time is now.

Chorus

Yeah! I got it, I got it!

Got a beat-up glove, a homemade bat, and brand-new pair of shoes;
You know I think it’s time to give this game a ride.
Just to hit the ball and touch ’em all - a moment in the sun;
(pop) it’s gone and you can tell that one goodbye!

Chorus
Chorus
Yeah!

3. Bummer when they pass at such a young age.
I'm not much of a sports fan and had never heard of him, truthfully, before a few days ago, but wanted to pop in and express my sympathies.
:hug:

It really hits home (no pun intended) when they're only a couple o' years older than US, eh?

11. As my dad always says, "Nobody gets out alive..."
I just hope when I go, I feel at peace and fulfilled.

Do you have your will done yet? Just curious.

4. I am very moved by this, my dear KitchenWitch......
I feel your sorrow, and your determination to rise above it, too....

If I am SURE of anything, I am sure Kirby Puckett is smiling down on us right now, and especially at this song......

Thank you for posting it.......

I hope your tears pass soonest.......and take your grief with them!

:loveya: :hug: :loveya: :cry:

6. I suffered a stroke in Nov. and again in Jan and am only 2 years
older than Kirby. Scariest thing I've ever experienced.

I'm so sorry for KP--what a great person.

I feel even more blessed now.

8. I am glad you are still with us!
Strokes are scary!

I am an almost twenty year survivor of cancer, and I can truly say that every day above ground is a good one.

32. So very true. Fortunately, my strokes were very minor.
I was treated at the same place Kirby Puckett was--he had some of the best care possible, that I can tell you.

7. My hat's off to him
I didn't always agree with him (esp. when it comes to public funds for a stadium), but he was a class act to all his young fans.

I will miss him.

14. Thanks KW!
I love that song, and it's so fitting for Kirby.

I was at a Mariner's game when it was announced that Kirby was retiring because of his eye problem. The entire ballpark let out a sad moan; I doubt there was anything there who didn't have respect for Kirby.

15. KitchenWitch, that is sooo appropriate...
I posted in another thread that this sad news tonight reminded me of the day Walter "Sweetness" Payton died.

They were both far too young, but they were both fantastic atheletes and even better people.

Kirby, RIP, you will be missed...

17. i don't know why
but i have been terribly saddened by hearing this news....I absolutely HATED the twins (and still do for '87) and Puckett, and I have reacted with cool indifference for the deaths of athletes/celebs i liked a whole lot more than him.....maybe it's grudging respect...maybe it is because he was a person that meant so much to the sport....maybe it's because he is a reminder of that 80s era where i first discovered my love for baseball--an era like all others, is vanishing from view...maybe it is something else entirely.

21. I'm so sad...
I had the good fortune to meet Kirby Puckett and attend a dinner which he hosted for the kids in 1989. I LOVED Kirby and revered him, even when I was 8 years old. He was busy signing autographs and enjoyed taking pictures with the kids.

I will always treasure my signed baseball and Kirby cards (Kent Hrbeck, Allan Anderson, Tom Kelly, and others have signed my baseball). I should find that picture of me with Kirby. The late '80's and the early '90's were lots of Twins swinging by Rochester, MN to do autograph events. I don't hear about them so much anymore.

The Twins still do a "Winter" tour of various cities in the region. I do know that Joe Mauer and I believe Carlos Silva were in Winona in late January.

I actually cried a little when I read Torii Hunter's statement. "I lost more than a teammate and a friend, I lost Kirby."

RIP

33. I made the mistake of reading the thread in LBN
In which certain people are busy trashing him. I probably said some things that will be deleted but I do not care. They are being insensitive assholes, in my opinion.

This is a great tribute. So sad.

One of my favorite songs...and definitely appropriate!!!

I've been listening to sports radio out here in DC all morning...even Mike and Mike in the morning who I normally can't tolerate very long did alot of great interviews with other players and stuff about Puck!!!

37. Yep that's them...
They simulcast their radio show. Here in the DC suburbs they get preempted on the radio by Tony Kornheiser.

Usually they are a bit too annoying for my taste, but they did a good job with the Puckett story this morning!!!
