Poll question: How long is your commute to work?
I'm just curious because I had fielded a call not too long ago and said my commute at an old job was about an hour each way... I had thought it excessive, but the woman responded matter-of-factly, "oh, that's not too bad."

So, I'm curious..

1. About 10 minutes (maybe two miles away)
depends on whether I walk, take the bus, or (rarely) drive.

3. I've been extremely lucky
Most of my working life I've had very short commutes.

I grew up watching my father having to commute from a distant suburb into Boston along the Southeast expressway. I think that gave me a good lesson and somehow I've managed to avoid that sort of commute for the most part.

16. Its not really bad at all
I sleep on the train in the morning and get some work done on the train home. I get to work in mid-town manhattan, but I live in northern westchester, own a couple of arcres (mostly covered in pine timber and oak timber) with great wildlife and wonderful hiking out my back door. My kids get to enjoy living "in the country" while I make more than enough money for a happy life. The work on the train lets me leave work early enough to spend time with the family at night. I love the train. Its the best part of my work day. Sleep in the morning and undisturbed work in the evening.

13. "Long" is a loaded term.
I was surprised, for instance, that the poll wasn't broken down by physical distance, but it makes sense. Even time, though, can miss the point. My own commute is usually a half-hour or more (except on Saturday mornings), but wrecks on I-20 this a.m. stretched it to nearly an hour.

Someone who counts on an hour drive every day, traffic-free, may not have it so bad. An hour in unexpected jams, though, can nearly ruin your day. It's all relative.

My commute is typically twenty-five to forty minutes, and is a little more than twenty miles.

15. One mile
And in the DC area, that is worth it's weight in gold. I pretty much applied for the position for that reason, even though it's not exactly what I wanted to be doing.

25. Yes, I was in CT until a couple of years ago.
Train from either Norwalk or Bridgeport to GCT. Then the subway to the fulton street stop, and then a walk to the world financial center. In Norwalk, I had a 15 minute walk to the train station, or road a shuttle from the hospital.

Damn, I don't miss any that commuting!!!1!!

18. 3 miles
I used to have a 45 minutes commute. I was given one year advance notice I was to be laid off(a bank merger). And, as I've told all my new co-worker's, I had a Scarlett O'Hara moment on I-480 during a winter storm. I vowed on that day, as God as my witness, to never drive I-480 again.

So, I found the company I wanted to work for and waiting for 8 months to the company to post a job I qualified for.

But, it paid off. I watch the local news every morning just to see the traffic report and watched the poor suckers in traffic, and smile....

I leave the house at 7:30am and get to my desk at 7:40am.

Now, I'm getting greedy and looking into working at home.

19. I live practically downtown.
So I can walk or take the bus. Riding my bike is the absolutely best and fastest way, now that the weather is nice.

I am spoiled for life. I can't imagine driving 20 or 30 minutes or more daily to work.

21. I work from home 2 days a week, commute the rest.
The only problem with working from home is that I look out the front window and think, "I need to get out there and work in that yard."

Of course, if I have a conference call and I don't need to have my notes in front of me sometimes I DO go out there and pull a few weeds.
