Any 'Monk' fans here?
I missed the first season and I'm 'outtadaloop'.

How did Monk's wife die?

What's up with his obsessive/compulsive disorder? Was he always like that or did it happen after his wife died.

Thanks :)

1. Monk's wife was killed
by a car-bomb planted by someone she was doing an investigative story on. Sorry, I can't remember the name of the murderer, although it was featured in another episode in the first season.

Monk's OCD is a result of the trauma of his wife's death, AFAIK.

3. As Monk himself says, "It's a gift ... and a curse"
I LOVE that show. Did you catch the episode where they went to Mexico and he wouldn't drink anything but Sierra Springs water, and he got so dehydrated he could hardly talk? That cracked me up - kind of reminded me of my dad, actually.

8. It was not really "solved"
but Monk has some pretty strong suspicions. IIRC, Monk is sure that the morbidly obese man for whom he had Sharona work as a nurse (while she was really spying for Monk) is behind his wife's death.

12. Monk's OCD
Though the trauma of his wife's murder worsened the OCD, if you watch that episode where he meets the runner he idolizes, there's a scene where a young Monk is unable to run in a race because he has to tie a shoe exactly right or something like that. So he had the OCD all along, it just got much worse after his wife was killed.

14. A couple of episodes indicate he had OCD since he was a kid.
The trauma of his wife's death caused it to increase, and he also became depressed.

4. My favorite was when he was in the locker room
watching reporters interview a baseball player and a player readjusted his towell showing monk his package temporarily. Monk then freaked out right there on the spot it was hillarious.

6. Monk - Season Two
I think his wife's death was described as the case he's been unable to solve, but yes that's what led to his disorder.

I just saw the pilot is now available on DVD.

Tony Shalub (sp?) - Won a surprise Golden Glove for Monk.

7. I am Monk's twin sister
Watching Monk is like watching myself--I am so much like him and I identify with just about everything he does. Like that scene at the funeral where the guy was coughing on his neck? I had the same thing happen except the guy didn't die. Finally, finally! Someone on TV with whom I can identify!

9. My favorite episode
was the guest starring Willie Nelson, not because it starred Willie Nelson (who is great in his own right) but because in this episode Monk is offered the chance to play clarinet on live radio with Nelson's band, and without "his" clarinet his OCD makes it impossible for him to play his solo. He merely stood there while the band played around what should have been his solo.

It was so poignant, so sad, so honest.

Following that one, I love the one where he goes to Mexico... That was a hoot.

All that said, he needs harder murders to solve.

15. Monk couldn't play because a stage hand put the clarinet in his mouth.
Monk ended up whistling his solo.
