Poll question: Leaving my job on May 31. My co-workers want to throw me a good-bye thing.
UGH! I hate those things. I mean I really, really, really hate them.

OTOH people I barely know are asking me for lunches. I don't want to go to lunch with them. If I let them do this party thing I can avoid the lunches.

And OTOH again, I should do what makes me happy . . . no?

I know I will not keep in touch with 98% of those who say "let's keep in touch!" And the people I will keep in touch with don't need to say it. They know.

What to do, what to do?

Realizing I won't rely on this poll for an answer, should I:

8. No party!
I would keep saying the same words when pressed: "No, I really don't want one, thank you." And congrats on the move. I hope it is to bigger and better things.

11. I'm leaving my job on th 31st, too (not my choice)
Long story but my contract didn't get renewed by the interim Dean b/c "I'm taking too long to complete my Ph.D." even though my student evaluations are beyond excellent. I'm a freaking good teacher and those credential letters after my name won't change that (plus, I'm very close to finishing up my dissertation!).

Anywho, I adore my department members and there happens to be several of us leaving this year (total coincidence - weird timing). Instead of a good-bye party, which I'm sure they would have done (b/c they're like that), one of the remaining members of my department is having all of us over to his home for a little informal dinner and to say our goodbyes. I'm really looking forward to it.

However, if you HATE those good-bye parties, just go for some free food, smile, eat cake, and then fake a migraine which causes you to leave early. (Or something like that.) It won't last long and you may get more enjoyment from it than you think. Whatever you choose, good luck. :hi:

13. Let them have the party for you!
I like the idea of wearing one of your cats on your head -- maybe one of the nasty feral ones.

Do you have something else lined up? IIRC, you're a legal secretary or paralegal, right? Best wishes to you.

14. Send out a card saying,
"In lieu of a party, lunch, or any frivolous act, please donate to the Katrina relief fund." That will get them thinking about what's really important, and make you feel really good.

I'm glad you're getting out of there. You deserve better.

18. Oh, open your mind a little
I'm a straight man and Dave Foley looks all right to me in a dress... hubba hubba.

I don't think they should let Scott dress up as the Queen of England though, he seems to enjoy it more than anyone should enjoy anything.

20. My previous co-workers had a little party for me on my last day.
It was unexpected, but I really appreciated the thought. I understand that you might feel a little uncomfortable by the attention, but let them do it. You'll get to hug the people you like and snub the people that you don't like, and you'll walk out of there feeling like royalty.
