1. It's not under your control
"They" assign it to you, and you alone.

Actually, it's automatically assigned at the server, and it IS out of your control. Of course, there are various ways to "spoof" it, but that would be WRONG.

2. Hmm
I don't want to do anything illegal.

I just want to change it...

If it's dynamic why doesn't it change?

3. It can indeed change from time to time
but it usually just stays the same, at least for a significant period of time- you "lease" the IP address, mostly on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, and it's mostly just easier and more orderly for the server to keep leasing the same address to the same place if possible.

Modems are only built to hold 2 IP addresses, and the second one is for backup. Once you've ran out of those, you'll have to buy a new modem.

27. No? I get a new IP every time I put a new machine through our router.
Of course, we have a dynamic IP anyway, but it only changes once or twice a year.

15. Is it static or dynamic?
In either case call up your ISP and deman to get it changed. . Stay on the line and go up to second tier support. I hope you know how to change your IP if you're given a new one. I hope you have a hardware firewall. You can use it to set the new IP.

19. If you're willing to be off a couple of days,
Release the IP address, shut down for a few days, and wait for it to be reassigned to somebody else.

23. If you have BrightHouse, like I do....

they allow you 10 hours of dialup a month. Supposedly for travelling or if you have trouble with the broadband, etc.

Just a thought.....

25. The DNS tries to remember the MAC address of your card
So after a while of inactivity it will give up and recycle the address.

Another way to do it is to request, or register a different modem with a different MAC address. The DNS will not reassign the same IP address, (just in case the old MAC comes back).

Ask your ISP to switch modems.

29. It may be enough time, but it depends on the ISP
The ISP decides the recycle time for old IP addresses. Generally it is 24 hours by default (at least for internal corporate subnets), and it is controlled at the gateway servicing one or more subnets in your area. If you're in a congested urban area (a lot of users) it will recycle quickly. If you're in a rural or suburban area, it will take much longer.

It is a crap shoot, I know.

32. It's worth going off line when not in use
Edited on Tue May-23-06 06:56 PM by Xipe Totec
Just power down the modem when you're not using it, try it for a few days; you may get lucky.

The more times you're off-line when the DNS is assigning new IP addresses, the better the chance you'll get a new one. But the IP address is assigned to the MAC of the cable or DSL modem, not the to the MAC of the network card on your PC. SO the modem is the one that has to be off-line.

Good luck!

33. Yes and sorta ...

Yes, I've used it, and it is basically as anonymous as it claims to be, but I said "sorta" because the anonymity isn't really anonymity as most people think of it. The thing is, Tor doesn't make any grand claims about anonymity. Read the fine print carefully about what it does.

The point is, you can be tracked by anyone truly wanting to track you. What Tor is good for is stopping the casual snoop from getting at you as easily. It's the same basic theory behind a really good firewall setup that makes you invisible to those trying to attack your computer from the outside. It works not because it makes getting at you impossible, but because it makes it harder than getting at the larger number of people that don't use, or use properly, such protections.

Also be aware that if you set yourself up as a Tor relay, you're asking for trouble, and that, in the end, will defeat the point because without a large number of people acting as relays, Tor is no good at all. The reason I say being a relay is asking for trouble is that if someone is doing something illegal using Tor, and the traffic goes through your machine, the originator is masked, but you aren't, meaning the police will come knocking on your door. They of course won't find what they're looking for, but the hassle isn't worth it, and they just might end up finding something else they didn't think they were looking for or that you didn't even know was there.
