Radio mike goes dead for Bonds' 715th
Poor David B. Flemming. Only his third year in the bigs, and he gets smacked with one of the worst things that could happen to an announcer.

It was not the moment for posterity KNBR had in mind, but it was unforgettable nonetheless.

KNBR broadcaster Dave Fleming was making the call on Barry Bonds' historic 715th home run Sunday when his microphone went dead, leaving the radio audience with crowd noise for more than 10 seconds until fellow broadcaster Greg Papa rushed on the air to pick up the proceedings and describe the achievement.

"If you'd only heard the rest of it, it was an unbelievable call,'' said Fleming, who was initially unaware that he wasn't being heard over the air. "It's too bad we don't have proof. I have to joke about it because it's too painful to think about."

1. Might only be his third year,
but he just got the initiation of a lifetime. He gets through this (and he will, sounds like), and the rest is gonna be a walk in the park.

This is gonna be the one call that haunts him, though.

3. Nor should they...
no broadcasting team worth their mousse would let something like that slide.

Ever.

It's...it's....

Heh...it's gonna be on his tombstone...

"The call Not heard around the world..."

4. I was just thinking...
The two "calls of record" for Aaron's 715th were both pretty lame. On NBC, Curt Gowdy said, "He did it! Henry Aaron is the all-time... home run leader now!" And on the Braves' radio network, Milo Hamilton's call was "There's a new home run king — and it's Henry Aaron!"

:eyes:

I could never figure out Gowdy's brief pause after "all-time."

5. I missed both of 'em...
Heard about it the next day at school, I think. And lately it's all be video footage of it. I don't think I've Ever heard the radio broadcast.

But there are a lot of things I've missed in my lifetime...

Do you realize, I'm 45 years old and I've never seen a shooting star?

8. What, 714?
I appreciated it. Didn't exactly go nuts, but...

Oh — y'wanna read a really good book about 714 and 715, pick up George Plimpton's "One for the Record." Tons o' trivia in there, including a funny conversation between Aaron and Joe Garagiola on a "Game of the Week" pre-game show.

10. Cool... about baseball
Uh, yeah.

When the Dodgers won the pennant that year, I watched the final outs of the clincher on a teevee at Harry Wardwell's Magnavox at Northridge Mall. My girlfriend, who was from LA, was shopping at the other end of the mall, and after the final out I went to find her. When I did, I ran up to her yelling, "The Dodgers won the pennant!" and carried her piggyback down the mall in celebration.

Cool. Yeah.
