Digital Camera help
Edited on Sat Jun-10-06 08:43 AM by Maine-ah
I would like to purchase an inexpensive but good digital camera for the hubbie for father's day (our first is due in Nov. and he has mentioned he'd like a camera)

So, since I really don't know a whole lot about them, is there anyone who could suggest some brands that make a relatively good quality camera, at a reasonable price. Which I consider to be about $200.

I was checking this one out...

would purchasing a bundle (printer and camera) be a better thing to get?

1. The only thing I don't like about that one
is the lack of a viewfinder. I know most folks just use the screen on the back, but when it's really sunny, those get tough to see. I have a Canon, and love mine. The animal shelter that I volunteered at had an Olympus, though, and it was a great camera.

Great gift idea, though. He'll love it no matter which one you get for him.

3. More megapixels=better
Also good to go with brand names: Canon, Nikon, etc. Here's a nice little 6.0 mp Canon for $209 (with viewfinder): http://www.macmall.com/macmall/shop/detail~dpno~7009512~name~PowerShot+A540+%2D+6%2E0+Megapixel+Digital+Camera~mfg~1118B001.asp

5. Do not buy anything under 5 megapixels
And I would suggest that you go up to 6.

Make sure you get at least 3x optical zoom. Digital zoom is kinda a bullshit category, especially at lower megapixels.

I'd suggest looking at cameras with 6 megapixels and 3x optical zoom, although these will probably run you more into the $230-$300 range. I'm not sure you can get a worthwhile camera that has staying power for under $200.
