After my uncle vanished -- his second wife, who he had already divorced, says his business associates took him for a little drive in the country -- I didn't expect to get any inheritance from him, since his will left everything to his third wife, and the children and brother who were still alive. But before the property could be divided, Rosie entered the witness protection program, Jim emigrated to some Caribbean island after reporting to the police that Allie had been kidnapped, and Joe's plane crashed. These things happen. So the entire estate, including all the Mellon bank accounts, remained unclaimed. I was in county when this started, due to a misunderstanding about several keys of heroin that the state claimed were mine, and so I wouldn't have been able to get to my uncle's funeral, but of course there wasn't a funeral. When the judge finally granted Rosie's request to have him declared legally dead, I wanted to go to the memorial service, but my lawyer said it would be better not to go back to town while the court order to stay away from my family was still in effect. So I was forced to mourn by myself in Seattle. And then the funeral parlor chapel where the service was supposed to be held burned down, due to faulty wiring. This was a terrible blow to Rosie, who not only wanted closure on Uncle Tim's death but also owned the parlor; luckily, she had just renewed the insurance with doubled coverage, and so the sad thought that my uncle's body would have been cremated accidentally if it had been there (despite his not wanting to be cremated), although it caused Rosie pain and grief, was somewhat offset by her relief at not losing everything in the fire. Meanwhile, while discussing another case with my lawyer, who is a smart man, I happened to learn that the entire inheritance might be mine if, heaven forbid, by some tragedy everyone listed in the will were to be unable to make their claims. I'd post more, but my lawyer said not to go online, so I'm trying to limit my internet time.
