we need help with a girl's name.
We're talking about trying to adopt again in another year or so, and Ms Uly thinks it'll be a girl this time. The name will hopefully integrate "Adeline", her grandmother's name, as either the first or middle.

Help!

8. Well, it almost has to end in a consonant.
Because it is hard to make a name (like Sara for instance) flow into a middle name that starts with a vowel.

But you don't like Sweet, so I got nuthin'. Funny how so many names end in a vowel.

10. Interesting, some combinations are definitely more appealing.
In sound and the way they roll off the tongue.

For example, two names starting with "A" in consecutive order sound lyrical.

A name that begins with "S" from the list seems to work better as the first with "Adeline" as the middle name, than if the "S" name is the middle name.

There must be some permutation software that can give you all the possible combinations to say out loud to see if you like it.

14. Depends if you want a "girly" sounding name...
or more of a gender neutral name. Also, how do you feel about nicknames? Adeline as a first name could easily become Addy. I have two girls and when I named them, I wanted to make sure that, as grown ups, they could easily be Supreme Court justices and not be embarrassed by their names. For example, would you want a Justice Bambi Jones?

16. Ms Uly explicitly wants
to call her Addy. This may or may not work, of course. Personally, I like gender-neutral names for girls, although that's not an absolute - I've pushed for both Sarah and Leah.

27. I once had a friend who swore he was going to change his last name ..
.. to Peters, so he could name his daughter Ophelia. His wife, however, never developed much enthusiastism for the whole idea, so his plan languished and withered, and his daughter, when born some many moons later, ended up with a very ordinary name. This was in Texas, years ago, and I've always suspected he was somewhat jealously motivated by the (true) story of Governor James Stephen Hogg, who rather gratuitously named his daughter Ima.

21. Harper Adeline?
I would love to have that name. Cause I'm a total TKAM geek.

When/if i have a son, I'm naming him Atticus.

Others? I like Zoe alot. But I don't know if it would go well with Adeline. I like Dylan too, for Bob Dylan, obviously.

25. Adeline was my grandmother's name.
She was called Lina. Sadly, she died when my mother was just two, so I obviously never met her. And I have no clue what her middle name was.

Good luck with adoption # 2. Hope it goes more smoothly than adopting Chris.

29. hey!
Yes, I'm hoping it doesn't take another 3 1/2 years and another $30k the second time around. I know we won't be as desperate as we got as time wore on last time.

I've warmed to Adeline over time. It beats my maternal grandmother's name - Verna(!). My dad's mom was Mary, but every time we try to pair that with another name, it's too Catholic schoolgirl for some tastes. :D

43. You could always use Adeline as the middle name
and could still nickname her Addie:)..Just make sure her first name does not end in an "a"..:)

I forgot your son's name.. perhaps you could name her something that sounds nice with his.. as in "My son .... and my daughter...."

I have always been partial to
Kathryn
Diane
Susan
Janet
Carolyn
Mary
Elizabeth

solid names that are never "out"..and sound just as nice for a Grannie as a baby :)

33. in open adoptions,
it's pretty common either for birthparents and adoptive parents to collaborate on names, or for birthparents to give a name with the understanding that the adoptive parents can change it at finalization, when a new birth certificate is issued. In Christopher's case, his birthparents actively refused to give him a name before we did - he was Baby Boy ________ officially until he became Christopher John.
