DU Catlovers - Share My Joy
Two months ago, my personal cat, whom I had had for 18 years passed on to that great sofa in the sky. I had been talking with my wife about getting a new one after Christmas. Our other cat, my daughte's, was very depressed without his friend.

Today, my mother-in-law called my wife. A beautiful tortoise-shell stray kitten had come to her door last night. My wife picked it up at lunch and took it to the vet. Tonight, she is making friends with the entire family, including 4 dogs. It's working out well so far. Wish me luck.

Merry christmas, or whatever.

10. Torties are great. I have a calico, though, different story with her.
Edited on Mon Dec-15-03 07:47 PM by put out
She is just flat weird. Useless knowledge: Cats with both orange and black fur are female. Black on one X and orange on the other X. When I got my calico weirdo misanthropic stupid-head, a long-time worker at the shelter said about her and her litter mates, "they're all sisters", and I commented that I thought all cats with black/orange were female. He told me that he had known two males with that coloring, but, in his words, "they wasn't ever right. A little touched, you know." With a grin from him. I grinned too.

Edit: I sure hope my facts are correct. If they are, and your cat has those boy-parts, please write a book.

39. Both the black and the red coloring
travel on the X chromosome, and not both at the same time. Thus, you usually have to have two X chromosomes to have both black and red fur. However, it's not all that rare to get an XXY male. They are generally sterile, but there are (rare) cases of fertile male torties. They don't breed true, however - they simply pass on whatever a normal red or black male would.

There's even rarer sex-linked colorations - for example, Pink Floid, the Red White and Blue cat, who proved genetically to be a chimera - two embryos fused in the womb. Genetically, Floid is a normal red and white male cat, but his appearance is ... well, basically impossible. Chimeras are VERY rare, and Floid's genetics have been extensively studied.

I've met him, he's a very nice and very handsome boy.

42. Yes congratulations!
I too have a calico that is a real wacko. I am not lying...this cat is allergic to cat hair. She continually has sneezing fits. I took her to the vet and he said that she is fine, she just might be enjoying the victim status of her illness. She got sneezing so bad a while back that she let go a huge long snot, WHILE ...sitting on my laptop keyboard. Needless to say she fried some of the the circuitry that controlled the keyboard.
To add insult to injury, my teenage daughters's huge English project had been saved to the C drive. And yes, it was due the next day. When we rebooted the computer, the screen said that a key was stuck. I had to pry almost all of the keys off of the keyboard with a butter knife to get the computer to reboot and successfully save the project to a floppy.
Anyway, congratulations on your new kitty. Every time we had a new additions to the feline family, my grammie would say, "God is smiling on us again!" And Happiest of Holiday. :)

7. Calvin and Tucker send happy cat thoughts your way
I know how you feel. Calvin's littermate, Hobbes passed away from complications from surgery to remove a bowel obstruction, and we miss him a lot. We put in at our local vet's office to get a new kitty the next week (since we had a specific idea of what kind of kitty we wanted, we thought we would be waiting a while), and two days later they told us that a 12 week old stray kitten matching the description we wanted was available for immediate adoption, and we immediately fell in love with him (Tucker). We took him home and Calvin was not terribly happy, but they are best buds now.

Congrats on the new gal, and how is that for providence, huh? You were thinking about getting one for Christmas, and 10 days before, one presents itself on your mother in law's door step.

8. Congrats!
There is nothing better than having a cat who finds you. One of mine forced his way into my friend's house when he was about six weeks old (we think he had been abandoned to the streets). I have never had a better friend.

She already has taken the place of honor on the kitchen table. The other cat is not happy about it, but has decided he likes her too much to make a fuss. I think.

Pets have a way of arriving right when you need them.

I found a stray at work a week after my old boyfriend moved out. Perfect timing.

I've been sick and trying to avoid crowds of people, so have become a hermit for about a week now. Kitty is almost always there. He seems to get closer the more I hang around.

37. Congratulations!
I have two torties -- both of them materialized out of thin air. I sometimes wonder if tortoiseshell cats don't just drop out of the sky -- if I didn't see so many kittens at the shelter where I volunteer, I'd think they did.

Mine are a little warped, but both very sweet.
