Has anyone walked on hot coals doing a fire walk?
I found it an incredibly mind over matter thing. Has anyone else walked on hot coals?

1. Not me. Wouldn't even want to try it. Don't like pain.

4. It's got nothing to do with "mind over matter"
Edited on Sat Dec-20-03 09:08 PM by Dookus
it's simple physics.

http://www.pitt.edu/~dwilley/fire.html

"It would seem then, that a firewalk of short length is something any physically fit person could do and that it does not need a particular state of mind. Rather, it is the short time of contact and the low thermal capacity and conductivity of the coals that is important, and it is not necessary for the feet to be moist nor callused, although either may be of slight benefit. Longer walks appear to be possible if a layer of insulating ash is allowed to build up on a well packed down bed, where the temperature has been allowed to fall significantly from what it was when the coals were at their hottest.

This is not to deny that one may feel empowered by having walked on fire, nor is it to dispute that it may improve self confidence. I do however believe that firewalking is understandable in terms of basic Physics and is not supernatural nor paranormal."

7. Physics is the answer
I hope you didn't shell out a lot of cash to some kook for the "opportunity" to walk over hot coals. People like Tony Robbins include it in his expensive motivational package. As the poster above explained, the coals are not very good at conducting heat, which is why you can walk across them and not get burned. It's also for that reason that coals are always picked, and not, say, wood.

Physics also has an answer to the "lying on a bed of nails" trick. Again, not mind over matter. The nails are lined up on the bed in just the right way, so when you lay down on it, the distribution of your body weight is such that a nail does not puncture the skin.

And yes, I would do it.
