Three things I'm looking forward to this autumn.
1. Rose City Rollers Championship Bout, with the Heartless Heathers vs. the Guns & Rollers, and the Break Neck Betties vs. the High Rollers in the bout for third place.

2. Point to Point Navigation, by Gore Vidal, the sequel to his memoir Palimpsest, which I have read at least five times, so much do I enjoy it.

3. A Random Walk Down Wall Street, Ninth Edition by Burton Malkiel, the Princeton professor who pioneered index investing. He promises a new chapter on behavioral finance and the results of his most recent research on investment topics. I also expect a discussion of the new craze in fundamental indexing, about which Malkiel and John Bogle have been furiously debating Wharton's Jeremy Siegel.

9. Goodness me, what have you learned thus far?
I've only skimmed the Fortean Times occasionally, being more of a Skeptical Inquirer type myself.

47. Strangely enough...
Fort was a 'Skeptic' as well...

He goes to great pains (in turn of the 20th century prose) to state he wasn't interested
in "Dog says, "Good Morning!" and then disappears in a green mist." stories.

Instead, the 'data' (ask he called it) was a collection of on the surface mundane stories
which had a deeper mystery which was frequently written off by the 'Authorities' as the
'Truth' might interfere with the story leading to them being deemed 'Authorities'.

Although, he doesn't mention it, I'm sure 'Continental Drift' would be among the types of
heresy that would catch his interest.

Kudzu might as well. :7

3. You didn't ask, but.... I'm looking forward to the
Grand Prix series of figure skating. Skate America is in October.

That, and cooler temps!

5. Are you going to see Skate America in person?
As for the cooler temps, most people in Portland, OR seem thrilled by the current autumn preview (cool and rainy) that we're receiving now.

Can't wait to meet them on the street next February, when they just want to choke the shit out of one another (and me) because it has been nothing but rain and gloom since Thanksgiving.

8. No, I just watch it on TV. It's in Hartford this year (too far).
It was in Pittsburgh last year (not too far from us) when the Russian skater (Totmianina-sp?) was dropped on her head. It was very expensive and poorly attended as I remember. I just love watching the entire series as it runs into early spring and gives me something to watch all winter.

7. You'd love it.
I've read three editions of that book now, and have learned a lot from each. I'm glad I read Malkiel when I was just getting started investing. Malkiel so coolly destroys the foundations of professional money management with facts and logic.

Now, of course, the big debate is between Burton Malkiel/John Bogle and Jeremy Siegel/Robert Arnott over Market Capital-Weighted (traditional) Index investing vs. the new trendy Fundamental (which for now means dividend-weighted) Index investing. It'll be fun to watch all that played out.

If you have any econo-finance books to recommend, I'd love to hear about them.

10. I had lived in Portland for two years already when I was traveling
by motor carriage around and about the hinterlands and chanced upon Del & Tina's Yamhill Cafe down in, of all places, Yamhill.

I was thoroughly bewildered when Del asked me, "How do you like our Ducks?"

"They're very pretty," I said. "They quack a lot."

I'm what you might call slow on the uptake.

in Santa Barbara.

This is the second rainstorm we've had in the last 4 months.

Shit, it POURED on my trip to Arizona last month, and POURED on my trip to the Salton Sea 2 weeks ago.

Like, WTF? I thought this was supposed to be arid and shit.

13. I'm also looking forward to the Gore Vidal book.
In addition, I expect to enjoy:

Finishing The Children's Hospital--an excellent book. Probably the best thing I've read all year if not years. Though I should say reading instead of finishing because I don't want it to end.

Seeing my friends again. It's been too long.

18. That new 4-hour Andy Warhol documentary
http://www.pbs.org/previews/americanmasters_warhol/

is on my PBS station September 20.

I wonder if that's officially autumn yet.

The only time I saw the band The Fall play, they began the show on the night of the autumnal equinox, the very minute autumn was slated to begin in my town.

But I think this one coming up is a new one, and is four hours' worth.

44. ah, i'll be watching for it here, in the one i was thinking about...
they were laying out how corny people thought his soup cans were, and that on a visit to his house one day, he actually offered his guests some...campbells soup; it was thought that he was being a vacuous smart-ass, which was never less than possible; or that maybe they gave him a lifetime supply or some such, but it was pointed out from a grander, art history point of view, that soup embodies: home, wellness, nutrition, caring, love...the whole nine, and so, classically artful themes

who'da thunk it, still love me some Andy though

45. Well, he took it all one big level beyond Duchamp
and others have gone further now, but in smaller increments. Duchamp an absolutely enormous leap, Warhol a huge leap beyond Duchamp.

One narrow, limited way of viewing a small sliver of things, but valid in its own stunted way, I think.

46. i love me some Andy for wholly other reasons, his poppy-ness...
being among them, a simple understanding of 'factory' & mass production, filling a space with 'pretty', though insofar as Duchamp imo Kienholz is another matter altogether
