When did turn signals become the sign for "Drive like a Speed Demon"

So I'm driving to work today. I work about 1 mile off the main highway here in North Delaware. Once I get off that exit and after I get past the clusterfuck intersection where the lane I was in suddenly becomes a right-turn only and everyone in the left lane is merging in with us and trying to get to that right lane for the turn, well I have about a half mile to get my car eventually over to the left hand lane so I can access the left turn lane into where I work

So after the redlight I starting looking for a break in traffic to get over to my left lane and about half-way to my destination a break opened up where the only thing behind was a Van that was about 2 cars behind and looked to be driving slow. I flip on my turn signal and start merging over and suddenly the driver of the van slams on the gas and decides he needs to speed up because god forbid I get in front of him. So I speed up a bit more because I'm getting close to my left-hard turn lane and the asshole speeds up more and if I miss the left hand turn it's about a 10 minute through another bad clusterfuck intersection to get my car turned around and heading southbound again.

I managed to get into the left lane and thankfully the left-turning lane had no cars in it or I know I would have hit something because I was doing about 80 just to pass this asshole.

So seriously, what is it about turn signals that triggers some idiots to see them to start speeding up and acting like assholes. This isn't the Daytona Speedway here, this is just a minor Delaware Highway - let me the fuck over asshole!

2. About the same time that 'Right Turn on Red' became 'Right of Way'

I encounter at least one person a day who turns right on red right in front of me, the person with the green light, and I have to slam on my brakes.

someone passing them becomes an intolerable insult. They're the same people who will drive in the fast lane no matter what, and, if by some fluke they're actually in the slow lane when you catch them, will speed up when you pull out to pass...
