Look what I did!

My grandson is 4 years old and I want to get him involved in sailing. There aren't any suitable boats for a skipper weighing only 30 pounds so I built one for him. He's a little small for a sail plan, so for the next year or so we'll just paddle it around for the next year or so.

His parents and I thought 15-20 minutes was all he could manage for attention span, but after an hour he wasn't ready to leave the lake! His dad & I accompanied him in my 16' canoe.





It took about 60 hours and $300 to complete. Two sheets of 3/16 plywood and 1 1/2 gallons of epoxy. It has enough sealed air chambers to support 400 pounds. The sail plan will add about $70 to the cost. It's called a Flying Mouse if it has sails, a Mouse as a rowing dingy.

3. Yeah, any commercially available boat is three times that cost.

It holds my 190 pounds just fine too. In fact I'm thinking of building another one with a little modification for doing wildlife photography on local streams and marshes.
