As it's the holidays
Edited on Tue Dec-23-03 09:59 PM by breezygirl
And we're all reminded of the togetherness many people enforce on themselves this time of year, I thought I'd regale you all with a tale about me and my mother on this most joyous of seasons.

It was Sunday at a Christmas party. Just me and my mom went, left my dad and brother at home. There's a whole bunch of people there, my aunts and great aunts and second, third and fourth cousins (a lot of extended family in mine) and then just friends of my grandma. So I'm there and I got introduced to this monk, Brother Ambrose. I was intriuged, because the only monks I've seen are the ones in "The Mission," which is a very good movie by the way. Anyway, my mom comes over because apparently this monk is a friend of my great-grandma. And then Mom's old friend from med school sees her and there's the whole "Hi! I haven't seen you for so long! How are you?," yada, yada, yada. And then she notices me, of course. "Is this Briana? Oh, I haven't seen you since you were soooo little! Oh, look at those curls, do you have a perm? No? Oh, it's natural. It wasn't that curly when you were little, was it?"

And then my mom says, in front of everyone standing within a ten-foot radius of us, (and you have to envision my mom, short little Minnesotan woman, saying this) "Oh, yah, ever since she hit puberty her hair's just been curling like the dickens."

:wow: Parents. Just gotta love em.
Sigh. :) Am I just being too sensitive? It's not really something I got mad over, it's just that my mom doesn't see how funny it looks when she says it. You know?

So, what about you guys? Nothing embarassing-sounding revealed at a Christmas party before for you?

1. Ouch...
That sucks. The most embarassing thing my parents do at every family gathering at my house is when I enter the room after i've spent some time on my computer, they'll say things like "oh, he's still alive!" or "look, he came out of his hole!". It's kinda annoying...

See, a few weeks back I had to come up with a story for speech team so I literally had to cram it, spend the whole weekend in my room writing. And when I came out they all said stuff like that. It is very annoying. :)

3. Not over sensitive, but
get used to it.

No holiday party stories for me; it didn't have to be a holiday for mom to share all:

graphic descriptions, including quotes, of shopping for my first bra to her current boyfriend

graphic descriptions to all of her women friends of my first visit to a gynecologist

encouraged me to go skinny dipping in a river up in the Sierras when I was 14, took a picture of me splashing around, and showed it to everyone, including male and female high school friends who happened to drop by for a visit. A high school boyfriend eventually palmed this picture to share with god knows who; I never saw it again.

Hopefully, the "hair curling" remark will be the extent of your mother's sharing!

:hi:

4. Yeah, let's hope so
If any of the stuff you described happened to me, well,my hair would curl, but it can't because it already has curled, I guess.
