He is driving in from Austin, TX, to visit his folks for the holidays. We are talking about Moody's for dinner and drinks.

i know they think they invented microbrews out there in seatle and all, but this here is a beer town and always has been. and goose island makes some of the best beer IN THE WORLD! moody's probably has some goose beers, so i don't think i would suffer from too much withdrawl. keep us posted.

I would be there but I have a valid excuse. I don't fly...and I live in Seattle. Damnit I wish I could be there. It would be awesome to be with two of my best friends at the same time.

i walked around lincoln park a little in the brutal cold last night. i'm happy to report that My Pi pizzeria is, in fact, still around.

after that, i went over to the heartland cafe in roger's park and had a hot apple cider. the morse avenue station on the north south howard line is still as seedy as ever. it truly was a beautiful sight for someone like me who gets depressed from the gentrification and homogenization of my city.

29. I hadn't heard anything of My Pi for years.

In fact, when you mentioned the name, I had to think for a bit.

I had to run an errand on Rush Street on Tuesday. Decided to drive home via Clark Street, which is something I hadn't done in a long time. Talk about the more things change, the more they stay the same. At least some of those great old buildings are still there.

The Thorndale and Granville el stations are still seedy as ever.

30. after visiting the heartland cafe...

...i drove back to my folks' house down devon avenue. i'm glad to see the abundance of indian and middle eastern restaurants remain. i may go restaurant hopping on devon tomorrow afternoon.

31. I remember when Devon was mostly Jewish.

There were some nice nearby clothing stores on Devon between Western and California back in the Dark Ages (joke) when I was a kid.

32. yeah....i remember that too.....

all types of discount stores and jewish merchants along devon near western. bagel shops too. but, there always seemed to be syrian shops and restaurants nearby as well as sari shops and indian markets. that neighborhood has been like a little chunk of the middle east for some time. i remember when the hacidic(sp?) jews would walk down devon avenue in a big procession once a year to stop over the river to toss in a piece of lint from their pocket...something about throwing away their sins. it's really an interesting neighborhood...i've always liked it.

33. I'm talking about Devon Ave. back in the 1950s.

This was when it still had Jewish delis vs. Syrian shops and restaurants. The procession still happens as part of Yom Kippur. I sometimes see them on the Touhy bridge over the North Shore channel on my way home from work.
