30. that name brought to mind
Chuck Connor, although that was not the Rifleman's name. So that's my pick - and he was a single parent too.

Wait, I'm not gonna get sent to the gungeon am I? :hide:

19. Red and Kitty were the best TV parents EVER.
Edited on Wed Oct-11-06 01:58 PM by FVZA_Colonel
They just clicked so well. Not to mention that their contrasting parenting styles were one of the show's better sources of humor.

40. Red Foreman
So reminded me of my own Dad. Plus the setting is similar with my graduating HS in 77. His bark is worse than his bite, but he does bite. And as brittle he was on the surface, he was a real softy underneath.

I've been collecting these over the years, so in no particular order:

Red Foreman's Words of Wisdom

There are only three times a man can say 'I love you': When he is drunk, When he is dying, and when he is in really deep trouble, which normally means he's drunk.

When used separately, women and alcohol can be a lot of fun. But if you mix 'em, they can turn you into a dumbass.

Son, you don't have bad luck. The reason bad things happen to you is because you're a dumbass.

Son, leisure suits are for dumbasses, trust me.

Without rules, we'd all be up in trees, flinging our crap at each other.

If you're not mad enough to bare-knuckle box, you're not mad.

Everyone, thank you for coming. I just wanna say that when my time comes, I wanna be buried face down, so that anyone who doesn't like me can kiss my ass.

Life's too short to spend it with people who annoy you.

I can't afford to feed your friends. I can't afford to feed you, but the law requires me to.

If I were a bird, I’d fly into a ceiling fan.

He's an ass... and he's dumb... He's a dumbass!

I've got two stages: anger and drinking.

I'm probably the only one here who's actually killed a man.

What are you going to put on your resume, Beck? Dumb-ass?

If they liked me, they'd leave me alone.

You do still like girls, don't you son?

I like the sound of a 'beer church'.

I'm not loving anyone I don't legally have to.

Oh, would you stop?! Luke Skywalker this. Luke Skywalker that. I'm sick of hearing about that little fruit.

ERIC: Look, Dad, I need my car. Don't you remember when you were in high school? I--I bet you had some good times drivin' around senior year with your friends.
RED: My senior year I was drivin' a gunboat around Okinawa. And if you count the Japanese snipers as my friends, then yes, I had some good times.

What the hell kind of college is this? Barefoot hippies playing Frisbee, barefoot hippies singing songs to trees?

There's nothing any of us can do. We're all screwed. You think I like being stuck here, nursing my lunatic wife back from the brink? Hell, no! But we can't control what happens to us. Even if by some stroke of luck, you actually hang on to Donna, eventually she's gonna turn into that. (he gestures to the bathroom.) And then a few years later you'll die.

You need to start thinking about your future: college, getting out of my house.

He did worse than Kelso? I watched that kid glue his hand to his face! You! What happened on the SATs?

Now use what little brains you got and hit the books, dumbass!

Why does everybody go everywhere with us? Look at all these damn kids. I feel like a Mormon.

Oh, no. She hasn't done this since Elvis died on the crapper.

Sorry Kitty, yelling’s the only part of being a father I enjoy.

I voted for Red too. Reminded me a little of my dad. Lots of bark, a small danger of a bite, but underneath a lot of love.

25. NOT the original Frank Costanza
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Costanza

In Frank Costanza's first appearance in the episode "The Handicap Spot" of season 4, the character was played by John Randolph. At the urging of series creator Larry David, once Stiller had been cast for Frank Costanza, the scenes with Randolph were reshot with Stiller for syndication. Also, Jason Alexander once revealed that a third (unnamed) actor had briefly been cast in the role circa 1993.

33. Oh yes they did
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morty_Seinfeld

Morty was originally played by Phil Bruns, who appeared in only the second episode. After that episode, Larry David decided that the character as played by Bruns was too laid back, and felt Jerry should have a more crotchety dad. By the time Morty made his second appearance (in "The Pony Remark"), the role had been recast with Martin. When the show went into syndication, Larry David wanted to reshoot Bruns's scenes with Martin (as he had done with the two actors playing Frank Costanza), but decided against the idea because the Bruns episode was too far in the past, and the differences in the other actors' ages would be noticeable.

No good picture of Phil Bruns available, google it though you will recognize him.

37. but that agrees with what I said
that they never reshot the scenes with Jerry's new dad. Thus I was aware that Jerry's dad was played by two different actors.

11. Danny Thomas (Marlo's father) on Make Room for Daddy.
I really was a good show, and he was a very realistic father. Very funny show, too. Jean Hagen was the mom. She played the horrible movie star who hated nice Debbie Reynolds in Singin' in the Rain.

but I have no idea if that was because John Amos quit the show.

44. Ralph Waite
Agnostic and understanding, sensitive but not self pitying. He brought some realism into that Norman Rockwellish family. But how he ever had such a whiney son like John-Boy, I'll never understand. And Will Geer was the best grandparent ever on TV.
