People still get jumpy when they see a plane in the sky here. We're pretty strong people but it definitely does make a lot of us uneasy to see something flying a little out of place, or hear of accidents involving this sort of thing.

But people's reaction to it is. It's terrible that some people got killed in a plane crash, but people are acting like it is a national tragedy. It's too bad that the same compassion isn't being used on child abuse, domestic violence and other more tragic things that happen in this country every single day.

I haven't been around here a lot...and certainly don't know any of you as specific personalities (though certain traits emerge)....but it seems to me sometimes people are just LOOKING for injury, where none is intended. This has me confused. It seems to me most DUers are an accepting and good group of folks. I was reading GD all day(in part because of my curiosity due to postings here) and really didn't see anyone make any really horrible remarks. Yes, I saw jokes about Bush and Rove and Clinton...how is that disrespectful to someone in the plane? Sorry folks, even if some did cross the line....I say it is a human thing, gallows humor if you will, whatever - people use humor to handle fear and uncertainty, maybe some don't, but some do. It does not make them cold or inhumane. My mother has had me in stitches laughing at the stories of the things she and her family would say and do during air raids in England in WWII. And I would look at her and say, "Weren't you scared? How could you laugh?" And she said that they HAD to laugh, because they were so scared. Which, for some reason, made perfect sense to my 7 year old brain. And it still does. So, I'm kind of confused at all this judging of Duers by other DUers. I see plenty of threads I have no interest in...I just don't go there; I don't feel the need to then vent my spleen on the OP in the thread I don't like.

40. Friend of mine ran out of fuel once.

He'd rented a light plane for some sightseeing.
Ran out of gas and had to put it down on a country road.
Was able to get enough gas from a farmer to take off again and make it to a little airport.
Of course it wasn't avgas, so the damn engine was coughing and wheezing the whole way.
We call it "pucker time".

The FAA never found out about it.
The guy was a former Air Force fighter pilot and a current airline pilot.
If the FAA had known it could have been the end of his career.

"Buddy? Didn't you check the tanks before takeoff?"
"Naw. They said they'd just refueled it. D-U-M-B, I know, I know."
