Old family Photos - ***dialup warning***
Edited on Fri Nov-03-06 07:50 AM by radfringe
My dad has been busy scanning old photos and sent me a disk with some real old photos - thought I would share a few with you.

I'm German-Italian. My dad's side of the family came from the Silesia area of Germany around 1926-1928.

For dial-uppers: the Italians are in the next post

The Germans:

My Great Grandfather. This is a picture given to each person in the German Army. It's difficult to see because of the size, but it's THE ORIGINAL CUT/PASTE. They would take a photo, print 3 copies, CUT out the heads and PASTE them in a pre-printed certificate. The original measures about 36" wide X 22" tall.

My Great Grandfather on the Russian Front (WW-1). He's the one seated on the left with the big mustache leaning on the table

My Grandfather (on the left) his dad are the one's in the pics above.

1. the Italians
Edited on Fri Nov-03-06 07:49 AM by radfringe
I'm Italian on my mom's side, they immigrated here in 1934. My grandmother's side of the family lived in a small village near Asti - called Monte Grosse d'Asti. My grandfather came from Torino (Turin..where the shroud of Turin is located.)

My Great Grandmother and two of her sons (on the maternal side)

My Great Grandfather also on the maternal side. He died fairly young. This is the only known photo of him. It was taken at some company function where he worked and was originally part of a group photo. After he died, a Friend of the family arrange to have just his picture removed and printed separately.. :) the original photo-shopping?

My Grandmother - the two pics above are from her side of the family

My Grandfather (original passport photo). He was actually in America following WW-1 (he was in the Italian Army). He stayed here for a few years, returned to Italy, married and came back. My mom was born the day after they landed.

2. Great photos! And wonderful that your dad is doing this!
When you look at the photos, what part of yourself do you see in them?

My dad was adopted, so can only look to his photos for comparison to self, siblings and grandkids. But, with my mom's side, it's cool to see the genetic connections going back generations.

3. it's a blend
high cheek bones from the german side. my nose is the same as my italian grandmother

body shape - it's the german grandmother

blue eyes are hard to tell which side - my german grandfather had blue eyes, however some of my italian relatives also had blue eyes.. same with the auburn to brown hair.

here's a statisical longshot.. my mom has hazel eyes, my dad has brown eyes. My brother, sister and me all have BLUE EYES.

in photos of me around the same age as my mom - I look like her, but as I grew older I started looking more like my dad.. now I'm told I resemble my Italian grandmother more

4. I love old family photos. Thanks for sharing them here.
I won't hijack your thread, but I have several of mine that I've displayed here at DU. it's fun to see where others came from and to hear their stories.
