Do you live in one of the top 25 most dangerous cities in the US?
I can't believe St Louis is number one! And I can't believe we (Philly) didn't make it! (Although Camden, NJ is right across the bridge.)

1. St. Louis
2. Detroit
3. Flint, Mich.
4. Compton, Calif.
5. Camden, N.J.
6. Birmingham, Ala.
7. Cleveland
8. Oakland, Calif.
9. Youngstown, Ohio
10. Gary, Ind.
11. Richmond, Calif.
12. Baltimore
13. Memphis, Tenn.
14. Trenton, N.J.
15. Richmond, Va.
16. Kansas City, Mo.
17. Atlanta
18. Cincinnati
19. Washington
20. North Charleston, S.C.
21. Reading, Pa.
22. Newark, N.J.
23. Little Rock, Ark.
24. San Bernardino, Calif.
25. Orlando, Fla.

(actually the FBI doesn't trust our statistics so we are not included)

on edit, people gave me grief for calling Detroit "Murder CIty". Well I guess both entrants in the World Series deserve that name.

52. New Orleans crime is down from historic levels since Katrina
Up through about April of this year, the city was downright safe, for those few who had managed to resettle. Since then, there has indeed been an upsurge in crime, to the consternation of those who view a safer city as one with a better chance at recovery -- but apparently it hasn't been enough to get N.O. back on those kind of lists. Let's hope it stays that way!

41. Chicago would be 52nd in their separate ranking
Designed specifically to include us. If you read down to end of the third paragraph in that section, you will see that cited.

They could not include rape because Chicago also includes ALL forms of sexual assault, not just female rape, in their crime statistics. Because of that, the ranking would be unfairly skewed against them.

44. Not a snafu exactly
We report all sexual assaults as opposed to just female rapes. The FBI standard is female rape only, we include male rape and other sexual crime. Because of that, Chicago would have more incidents of overall rapes reported than any other city in the survey.

Take the rape statistics away and Chicago came out as the 52nd most dangerous city.

It was ok here for a little while, but has gotten more dangerous in recent years.

Truthfully though, if you want to hear about when Cleveland would have been closer to top on that list was back in the 20s and 30s when it was a mob town. Cleveland has a really interesting past.

27. We're number 1! Another thing to beat Detroit at!
Although there has been some discussion of that in the St Louis news. Apparantly, this survey only takes into account St Louis City, not the county or suburbs. Because of the way the city/county are incorporated as separate counties, the city cannot annex land or expand. If the city were allowed to annex land like most other cities, the numbers would be a lot lower.

This is the latest:

EDMONTON -- Three men died early Sunday after shots rang out at a nightclub in downtown Edmonton, police said.

The three deaths bring to 32 the number of homicides in the city this year, making it the second highest year for murders in Edmonton history — with two months to go before year's end.

Last year still holds the record with 39 homicides.

Lots of those can be blamed on our governments great stewardship of our jobs, and employee rights protection.

80. my city fell out of the rankings - we need to work harder
Dayton, Ohio just ain't as dangerous as it used to be. We used to be in the Top 10.

Probably because there's about half the people here as there once was.

81. Little Rock is pretty rough
from 12th street on south.

Asher, Roosevelt, 65th street, University are all havens for crime of all sorts.

A friend and I used to go scanner-police-chasing down there, and we saw some awful things.

87. job-wise, you pretty much rattled off all of the possibilities. . .
but I digress, we've had a real epidemic of murders down here. Orlando's getting pretty hardcore. They say 1000 people move here a day or some such ridiculous thing. You should see the highways, one look at traffic - combined with the heat - and you'll understand the murder rate. It's crossed my mind a couple of times for sure.
