6. A parachuter.
I remember a "career day" when I was 5th grade. There were boxes of cards for students to read about their chosen future profession. I went to the teacher because I couldn't find any cards about jumping out of airplanes wearing a parachute.

She directed me to the "SOLDIER" card, but then said "I don't think they let girls do that. What about 'NURSE'or 'TEACHER?'"

62. Me, too, Supernova.
Although I'm sure I didn't want to be a hack writer who couldn't write a plot to save her life, but you know how that goes, probably, in some sense or other.

I also wanted to be a veterinarian. Now, I volunteer at an animal shelter and write as a hobby, so I'm probably never going to make a living at either thing -- I don't really have the talent to be a successful writer, and I don't have the patience to finish the schooling required to be a vet. But I at least make an effort to do things that give me some of what I wanted back then, so it's not all bad!

where readers could submit their own designs and get a credit at the bottom of the comic strip. My girlfriend and I would draw fashions by the hour, specializing in evening and bridal gowns, hoping that Katy Keene would wear our fashions.

Lots of us did back in the 50s. We went to catechism class every week and were attracted by the outfit, I think, which was similar to a bride's outfit, which was every little girl's goal back then. We all had bride dolls and used to tell our friends, "You're going to be my bridesmaid."

Sad to imagine today. Women had so few options then.

38. Architect
I played with blocks and thought that buildings were cool. I had a book about buildings houses, which is why I remember that I wanted to be an architect. I also had a good visual, 3d memory and concepts for a little kid. I accurately remembered and drew the lay out to the house that we moved from whn I was three, which I guess is phenomenal for a child that age. For some reason, that part of my brain quit advancing. Sometimes I feel mentally handicapped when it comes to mentally working with 3d objects that aren't in front of me.

And she couldn't tell me what I wanted to be. But based roughly on that time in my history, I probably was most likely to want to be famous, regardless of anything else. I remember my mom wanted me to be an ice skater, and I did indeed learn to skate from an Ice Capades fellow, but I remember I was never good on skates--weak ankles. I did read a lot of comic books, and was quite fond of reading Supergirl, so perhaps that would have been my choice.

I was a reluctant tomboy. The youngest of 3 girls with 2 brothers, was sent outside to play with the boys. I climbed trees, played trucks, you name it but I really wanted to dress up. I loved to put on full skirted dresses of my sisters and twirl around. The older I got the more "ladylike" was able to become and I still tend to dress up more when I get the chance.

74. A cop.
When I was a kid, my grandfather (the only father figure I had when I was growing up) was a justice of the peace. He would serve every week on the bench at our local municiple court house. After he would finish doing his stuff, the police would always drop him off at home. Of course I would always be waiting outside, just so I could see him rock up in the cop car.

Anyway, one day, he asked the coppers if they wouldn't mind taking me for a ride in the police car, they said not at all, and decided to take me around the block with the sirens screaming, and the lights flashing. That was when I realized I wanted to be a cop.

I wasn't to live my dream though, I was too short to join the accademy.

76. President
I even got a "How to grow up to be President" book for a birthday present. I'm not sure, but I think chapter 1 was "Be born into a rich, aristocratic family."

77. A gypsy
I wanted to live with the gypsies. My mom had told me they stole children when we lived in Italy (Dad was military). I "ran away" from home at 6, but the gypsies wouldn't take me. They told me to go home to my mom. I felt quite betrayed. :D

78. An Artist
When I was little I drew with crayons on grocery bags...I knew then what I wanted to do with my life.

I'm 45 now and work at it almost every day.

80. A priest...
I even remember telling someone on one occasion during that age that I'd be pope someday.

But I can't see that happening for another 500-600 yrs., since I'm a progressive American Catholic...

I thought teenagers were cool, and I only got as far as deciding what to wear: mini-skirts and go-go boots. It was the 60s (obviously.)
