5. I just made a donation to Defenders of Wildlife this afternoon.

And a polar bear was one of the animals I adopted for a member of my family.

I just got an email from them this afternoon, asking for emergency donations...
It seems that polar bears are drowning, because they have to swim too far from ice sheet to ice sheet. :-(

It says:

Over the holidays, the Bush Administration will decide if polar bears deserve protection under the Endangered Species Act.

They will either throw polar bears a lifeline -- or condemn them to extinction.

Please make a donation today so that NRDC can spring into action on behalf of the polar bear as soon as the Administration makes its decision this month.

If the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service proposes "Threatened Species" protection for the polar bear, your financial support will help us launch a media blitz and an online campaign that will counter stiff opposition from Big Oil and Big Coal.

11. The Heifer Project is also a good charity

www.heifer.org. ( I swear it's a real charity and not a porn site) It donates livestock and educates people throughout the world on how to raise the livestock to benefit the community/ tribe. It doesnt just give them the fish, it teaches them to fish- per se.

Another question: How can you effectively get your family to donate if they insist on giving a gift? I have told people year in and year out to please not get me anything. I am fortunate I have food, shelter, and an ipod. I try to tell them that there are millions who have nothing, but stll I get gifts and giftcards. My extended family started two years ago and we adopt a family that needs help and give them a holiday dinner and gifts for their kids. I try to tell people to try it as well. The joy of giving is more addictive than crack. Sounds corny- I know but's it's true.
