19. I. Wish.
 I'm calling tomorrow to see what the deal is, because the bill doesn't say 'why' we owe.

2. Did you expect it? Is it right? Did they wish you "Merry Christmas?"
That sucks...

7. Nopers. I *think* it's an error, but my accountant had a brain aneurysm
a few months ago, so I can't ask him for a bit more.

21. Damn - that sounds like the set-up for a ridiculous comedy movie (huge bill
right before Christmas and an incapacitated accountant - what hilarious hijinks will our heroes go through to get out of this?) Of course, it's not funny when it's real...

Hope it works out smoothly (and your accountant recovers fully).

24. I know. You can't make this stuff up.
I'm laughing right now, and I hope I still am tomorrow after getting off the phone with *them*. You know, the kinder, gentler, IRS. :eyes:

28. Seriously? I thought you were always supposed to approach
them first? What if I ignore this and they put a lien on my house or something like that?

I *do* think it's a mistake, otherwise, I would be lying in a coffin somewhere.

37. They'll attach your bank account first, at least that is what they did to us.
They sent us a letter saying that they had attached our bank account (it was a closed account and we hadn't opened another one yet) and next they would be going after any property we owned and would also be garnishing wages. We paid up.

This was for $4,000 dollars most of which was interest/penalties on the unpaid portion not paid in full at the time of filing. I wouldn't mess with the IRS. It was a year before they contacted us and that much interest and penalties had accrued. We should have filed an extension or asked for a payment plan but we had planned to pay up, but my husband lost his job, we got behind and the IRS took a back seat in our priorities. Huge mistake! Never again. Lessons learned. I hope this is just a mistake and everything works out for you.

18. Well, I *was* a tad shocked.
We paid our taxes for that year, yada, yada, yada. And to make it even *more* interesting, our accountant had a brain aneurysm about two months ago. He's still recovering. He probably won't even recognize my name when I call.

I hope the IRS can find the mistake, and if not you are probably going to have to get another accountant, and maybe a lawyer...I hope everything pans out...

I certainly *hope* it is a mistake.

10. LOL. I wish. Then I would have the money to pay this particular bill.
But, they're very kind and forgiving. They gave me until January 7th to pay the bill. That should give me time to hang myself and let my heirs fight over the life insurance.

/kidding.

15. I hope so. But we exercised some options in 2004 to add on to the
house and it could be that. I *thought* the accountant had everything squared away, but hey, I'm not Ken Lay.

Wish the dealer didn't have a 'buyer's remorse' policy or I'd take the new van back.

/kidding. No I wouldn't. I like it too much. I'd sell one of the kids first. I think matcom will buy TeenMidlo for a decent price.

our houses were the same age after receiving this bill, my blood ran a tad cold.

Could be worse. Right? Right? RIGHT???????

14. I know Bush's war is going to cost each of us about $30k...
but I never expected they'd want it from anyone in a lump sum.

You may want to call the IRS and ask them if it's right.

you mentioned that you exercised (stock?) options in 2004. They noticed and are calling you out on it. No worries. It's a fishing expedition.

27. I hope so. But there are two different kinds of options that we
exercised; one you pay the tax up front, one you pay at tax time. I thought, according to the accountant, that we were all good and he's never steered us wrong before.

*fingers crossed*
