I've always hated that phrase. Has nothing to do with being offensive, just with it being dumb.

As for not knowing what's offensive anymore, my grandfather used to say that, too. He didn't understand why he couldn't use the N word anymore. My rule of thumb is to speak plain English and say what I mean. I'm lousy at it, but I try.
