Anyone think Ellen Degeneres is funny tonight?
She's running hot and cold so far; but the Oscars are a bad gig for comics, IMHO. They probably get a list
a mile long of what not to joke about, which takes away half of their material.

1. She has writers who wrote her material.
Some of it is funny, some not.

She still shines, imho.

3. I'm not watching, but I think Ellen could make just about anything funny.
Even bad material.

She's got dead-on timing.

comedic style.

7. I think she's perfect....
She's gentle and funny and exactly what we need in the face of the continuing war in Iraq and horrifying reality of BushCo.

(And she did get her political comment in there..)

:applause: I think she did a fab job.

What was with all the costume changes, though? I think she should've stayed with the cool-looking white tux.

32. yes, the white tux was gorgeous, and she looked great in it...
most of the female hosts change their wardrobe once or twice.... And the white was the most flattering to her, I didn't really like the red too much, but the last dark blue one was OK.

10. I'm impressed. It's a tough gig, and she's doing well.
She's charming and likable and just silly enough.

The bist with the script with Scorcese and the photo with Eastwood were funny.

17. "Boy I'd HATE to follow that...now presenting the Oscar for.."
I thought she was very funny. She stayed away from rehab jokes and anything actually political (other than stating facts) and she was measured and funny.

18. She's always amusing
I can't say that I've ever laughed at loud at an Ellen Degeners joke, but she always entertaining in a weirdly non-threatening way. She can't dress for shit though.

After Jerry Seinfeld's intro for the documentary awards, I have to wonder why he has never hosted the show. Isn't he the closest thing we have these days to Johnny Carson? He's a legitimate "star." He's genuinely funny. And he's cynical in that non-offensive Oscar way.

25. I was afraid she was going to fall into the Letterman trap
And try to bring elements of her show into the ceremony, and when she started with the tamborine I was like, No! But it ended there fortunately. I thought Jon Stewart did a great job last year, but the job may be more suitable for Ellen, and if given another chance I think she could grow into and be as successful as Carson and Crystal.

I noticed in the credits at the end that Carrie Fisher was one of the writers, along with the venerable Bruce Valance. I thought they all did a good job.

27. I thought she was good. I don't like the scripted jokes on these shows, usually
but she made them amusing. Though mostly I had the tv on while I was working, and just ducked into the room now and then for the actual awards. I only saw her a couple of times. The Spielburg/Eastwood camera thing was hilarious, and the vacuuming was funny.

28. I think Ellen was the funniest host to date

She was great! And she was nice (except for the "eyes" joke
about Judi Dench). Past hosts always try the dry humor-make
fun of everyone approach.

31. She has perfect pitch. Endearing without being
sentimental. Never caustic. She's just not an edgy person. And that's fine. She was gracious and clever.
I liked her going into the audience and being spontaneous.
I also liked Will Ferrell, Jack Black, and John C. Reilly's song and dance. Thank goodness Reilly can sing. Their flirting with Helen Mirren was fun.
I also liked Meryl Streep's silent exchange with her co-star presenters, Anne Hathaway and Emily Blount.
And Robert Downey, Jr. is always interesting.

A lot of those jokes stunk though. Oscar writing is always terrible.

I don't know why they keep hiring that guy from Hollywood Squares.

She is my all time favorite comedian, so I'm probably a bit biased. I hope they ask her next year. I love that she always keeps it real. Even when it comes to her wardrobe.

36. She was the best part of the entire show!
I think she's funny without being annoying. Now, if they could just cut the show down to 8 or so categories...it would be great.
