2. New to me, at least--I've discovered these within the past 6 months or so (with Myspace links)
Edited on Mon Feb-26-07 11:12 PM by Spider Jerusalem
Madrid de los Austrias

Brazilian Girls

Grinderman (new Nick Cave project)

Emilie Simon

Françoiz Breut

And I dig the Bombay Dub Orchestra; Six Degrees puts out a LOT of good stuff (I have several albums by people like Karsh Kale and State of Bengal on their label)

5. Yeah, I saw "The Proposition"...
Edited on Tue Feb-27-07 12:05 AM by Spider Jerusalem
good film (rather bleak, but good).

And he's supposed to be going into the studio this summer to record a new Bad Seeds album, too.

I'm really digging what I've heard of Grinderman, though; rocks harder than anything he's done since "Murder Ballads", at least (and maybe since his days with the Birthday Party).

And on edit: Here's the video for "No Pussy Blues" (directed by John Hillcoat, who directed "The Proposition"):http://youtube.com/watch?v=4adzzRE8oAk

7. Excellent vid,thanks!
These songs remind me of Birthday Party with a dash of Jon Spencer/Pussy Galore (not as sloppy, obviously, but the same vibe).I'll be keeping an ear out for this one!

Telepathe
Scanners

Yura Yura Teikoku

17. The Aggrolytes and Firewater
The Aggrolytes are funky, soulful reggae (think "Pressure Drop" era Toots & The Maytals

Firewater is fun and kinda weird. Think Tom Waits, David Byrne, with a bit of Soul Coughing.

19. Best source of new music
The best source of new music I've discovered, and I'm kicking myself for not knowing about this earlier, is the internet radio service called Pandora, at www.pandora.com/ It's totally free, no audio adds, some unobtrusive banner ads, and easy to use. Not affiliated with them, just love em.

You put in an artist or song you like, and artists that are related come up. You can have individual radio stations for each mood, up to 100 separate ones, or switch between all of them at random. I discover new music I love at LEAST once an hour.

Here's a few I've found:

Explosions in the Sky-band out of Austin, hypotizing spiritual rock, instrumental

Toubab Krewe-African influenced band, great song writing, instrumental

Tarnation-Indie country rock, does the definitive version of "Little
Black Egg"

Shonen Knife-I'd heard of this band before but never got to hear them. Silly, fluffy, happy and addicting Japanese girl-rock.

Meshsuggah-Seriously heavy band from Scandanavia, effective polyrhyms, don't listen when you have a headache coming on.

23. I found TOO much at Pandora
It rocked, but I found so much I would never have heard of, it's been hard to catch up with it all. I was like Shocked how much stuff there is on there that no one I know has heard of.
I haven't signed on there a few weeks, it sucked up a weekend when I did sign on :wow:

30. Rufus Wainwright
'Poses' on a recommendation by a fellow DUer. CD just arrived on Friday. I listened to it obsessively all weekend. I have one of Loudon Wainwright III's CD's and was curious about his talented children. Just ordered two more Rufus CD's from Amazon yesterday. This is my very favorite singer/songwriter at the moment.

I have a Wailin Jenny's, Damien Rice, and a Vienna Teng CD, too They are three of my favorites. :hi:

Late January I discovered these two local bands who both kick ridiculous amounts of ass.

http://www.myspace.com/swords666

Dustin Kensrue, from the band Thrice, recently put out a solo album which is pretty good.

I'm not really sure what other new stuff I've heard recently.
