HP printer help - PC using Windows XP
I have an all-in-one HP 1610. I know that the yellow is gone in the ink cartridge, so I removed it and replaced with one from an unopened package. Now it says "Remove and Check Color Cartridge"

It's brand new, the tape's removed and it's the correct cartridge. When I print anyway and ignore the message, I get light and dark streaks on the images. This couldn't happen at a worse time. I'm trying to get a fundraising brochure done for a client.

Isn't there an option to tell the damn thing you're changing the cartridge?

Help??

1. I use a 1610

When I change the cartridges, the printer automatically "knows" a cartridge has been replaced and the display asks me to hit the OK button to calibrate the cartridge. It then sputters like a coffee machine for a minute or so, before printing off a test page. Are you changing the cartridge with the printer on or off?

3. Printer's on
I've put the old cartridge back in with no problem, but since the yellow is gone, it's worthless. I'm also not getting a low ink message.

5. Hmm, that's odd.

Maybe try taking the black one out too, then putting the black back along with the new color one. Maybe the machine needs to see both cartridges replaced before it gives you the setup message.

6. Thanks
It accepts the black cartridge fine. Still wants me to remove and check the color cartridge.

:(

9. Grrr.
Are you sure all the tape came off? I remember once a little bit of cellophane was left on one of the contacts, so the machine kept saying "no cartridge inserted. That was with a different printer, though, so it might not be a problem with the 1610 cartridges.

10. The tape came off almost too easily
I have a sinking feeling that the color cartridge is dried out or defective.

12. That sounds like a possibility.

If the nozzle is dried out, no ink may be getting through. I guess you could try to clear it with a toothbrush or soft cloth, but it might be better to just take the damned thing back.

I seem to recall that there is something you can do to trick printers into thinking old cartridges are new. If you try that on the new one, it might make it work. I don't have a bookmark to give you (it was a few years ago when I read it), so you'll have to google around.

2. Try turning it all off and see if the machine will reset.
Or just bang on it the way we used to with our old TV set.

4. I'd like to throw it out the window
Lelapin has the same printer and apparently has had the same problems. Maybe it's a bad cartridge. I just got it and the package was unopened. :(

11. I had trouble with my HP 1315 a while ago
Edited on Wed Feb-28-07 10:48 PM by Generic Brad
And after two weeks of screwing around with it and throwing good money at the problem with no positive result I did what any reasonable person would do. I trashed it and bought a printer from Brother.

16. I have a 1315, calibrate & clean
and use that bullshit test page.

Don't have a problem with my printer.

DON'T BUY SUB GRADE cartridges either, the chips can cause that scenario.

Just buy reputable cartridges, cheap never works.

20. It wasn't the cartridge
My PC suddenly decided to recognize every printer in the world except the 1315. Coincidentally it was one week after the extended warranty on the printer expired. Things that make you go hmmmmm.

13. There's software to 'lose' the settings
Let yourself be detected here

http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html?pageDisplay=drivers&jumpid=re_R329_prodexp%2Fhhoslp%2Fsplit%2Fdrivers

And you'll find an option for cartridge re-alignment. Run the tests again ... several and you're through.

14. Older HPs have a tendancy to go to death in this way -
not recognizing a new cartridge, printing like it still has an old cartridge in it.

I've had it happen to a couple old printers (in the 7-8 year old range)
