Popular local garage bands when you were in High School? Did any of them make it big?
The best in Columbus, Ohio were the Dantes, The Electras, and The Rebounds.

The Dantes were easily the biggest and best. Barry Hayden their lead singer moved to Hollywood, CA in the late 60s and formed a group named Hero. The last time I saw them (around 1970) they had signed with a label and were recording an album.

About The Dantes
Columbus, Ohio.
mid-'60s.
The Dantes.

The Dantes released three singles in the mid-sixties on Jamie Records and Cameo Records. Although they mostly played Rolling Stones and Byrds covers, they also had some originals, "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love" and "80-96"

"80-96" has been featured on many '60s garage/punk comps, and has been described as a 'Yardbirds-esque Rave Up', but really this B-side has a life of its own, straying from the "radio friendly" pop songs and going headlong into the world of garagepunk that we all love and know so well.

The Dantes opened up for such acts as The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Byrds, Iron Butterfly, Them, Strawberry Alarm Clock, Roy Orbison, and The Outsiders. They also served as a one-time backing band for Neil Diamond.

1. Clover
Clover was a really popular local band that often played at my high school during lunch periods in the late sixties. They became big when Huey Lewis joined the band and they changed the name to Huey Lewis and the News, and as they say, the rest is history.

3. Tampa Florida...my sister....
went to school with some guys who had a band. Some of them went on to become The Outlaws. They used to practice in Monty Yoho's (the drummer) parents house in Town n' Country (IIRC, it was the house on the southeast corner of Jackson Springs Rd. & Town 'n Country Blvd.). My sister was at Leto High School, class of '69.

Here's a pic from '69 from their website - although it's not The Outlaws, according to the text it's the Dave Graham Group.

The best band I remember the name of from my time period (I'm Leto, class of '77) is a band called Bridge.
