Hockey fans....shut out record set in 1949 broken
Edited on Sat Jan-10-04 02:39 AM by Tripper11
Brian Boucher of the Phoenix Coyotes just broke it.

Lnnk here to TSN

The cool thing is this kid is a 3rd string goalie who got a chance and really took advantage of it.

Way to go Brian!

1. Incredible -- hooray for Boucher
Here in Saginaw, we know goaltenders (Eddie Belfour, Darren Pang, Mike Palmateer, Bob Froese and Mario Lessard all played here) -- but five hours plus without allowing a goal is just insane.
John
Our (Saginaw Spirit -- OHL) current starting goalie, Mike Brown, is a draft pick of the Boston Bruins -- and he's a good one, too.

4. Like consecutive scoreless innings pitched in baseball; Unitas in football
This is a truly great sports record achievement. Reminds me of Drysdale, then Hershiser, pitching nearly 60 consecutive scoreless innings (over six games of shutouts!). Another great individual achievement in a team sport is Unitas' 47 consecutive games with a touchdown pass. DiMaggio's hit streak and many others are comparable. This is truly a historic sports achievement, and it should be recognized as such. Let's just hope Sports Illustrated doesn't put him on the cover - he'll give up seven goals!

5. I'm happy for Boucher, but.....
Edited on Sat Jan-10-04 11:12 AM by DoctorBombay
....I mean, Phoenix wanted to get rid of this guy prior to the season, and no one would take him. Good for him.

But, it makes me cringe because it is yet another sign of how this league has become so trap-oriented. The life is being choked out of it. Last game I went to, last weekend, I could not count how many times that all ten guys were in the neutral zone. NHL hockey is played between the blue lines these days, and it's driving me nuts. I don't want 8-7 games, but the lack of scoring, lack of scoring CHANCES, really, it to be lamented.

Tripper: you're lucky, you watch the Leafs, one of the few teams left that are actually exciting to watch! I'm a poor Kings fan, I'm just waiting for the next injury...

7. I'm sure he did...
I don't want to take anything away from Boucher, that's a hell of an accomplishment, especially since his career was on life support. My point was more on the league overall.

Call the rulebook, widen the blue and red lines to six feet (making both the offensive and neutral zones bigger), put the nets back to where they were (two feet closer to the boards), and relax retrictions of the curvature of the stick blade.
