Anyone know if the symbolism in Children of Men was intentional? (spoilers)

Anyone know if the symbolism in Children of Men was intentional? (spoilers)
Was it just me, or was children of men basically a futuristic telling of the nativity story? It's a beautiful movie, don't get me wrong, but i couldn't help but catch all the symbolism.

Miriam (Mary), the caretaker

Doesn't know who the father is, definitely not Theo

Everyone forced to go to Bexhill = Bethlehem

even a flock of sheep walk by after the baby is born = shepards

2. Hmmm...'Theo'? As in 'theocracy'?
1 : government of a state by immediate divine guidance or by officials who are regarded as divinely guided
2 : a state governed by a theocracy

Even more symbolism?

3. In the book
The child's father was a priest. Haven't seen the movie, but I can tell you that some of that must be the filmmaker's additions, so maybe it was intentional.
