1. That Heart of Gold video ( the 2nd one for those of you who like to skip ) is what
American Idol should be about. Actual talent.

8. Yeah, wouldn't it be something if American Idol people had to do their own stuff?
Instead of just singing like someone else, to someone else's music, with someone else playing the music behind it?

I'd much prefer to see an actual talent show - not fucking karaoke done by talentless assholes.

9. Until you pointed it out
I had failed to see it as karaoke stripped of the alcohol and fun

It's all so simple now * but it still sucks *

14. Yep - that's all it is. Fuckin' Karaoke.
I want to see a show in which PERFORMERS and MUSICIANS come on stage, perform THEIR OWN MUSIC on THEIR OWN INSTRUMENTS, and get judged thusly. And it should be open to differing kinds of stuff: maybe a three piece band with no singing; a four piece song singing combo; an a capella group; a 14 piece prog rock symphonic wunderkind band; jazz trio; piano and soprano doing George Crumb-like music; and so on.

I think it's bullshit that the only "talent" show is dedicated solely to singing, and not even good singing, but singing other people's crap all in the pop rock idiom, which is an artistically bankrupt medium to begin with. And yes, I mean crap. Christ, they don't even sing good or difficult or interesting music.

I wanna see a show in which it's something like Yes versus David Bowie versus John Coltrane versus Stockhausen versus Aretha Franklin versus The Allman Brothers versus Frank Zappa versus Johnny Cash.

THAT would be a show I'd watch.

13. Those were awsome! I used to be able to get them on cable,
and watched them a lot, but it's been years now. Thanks for the flashback.

6. Thanks, Joe. Those were great! Three legends on the stage at one time!

I think this video is from the Vote for Change tour in 2004. I was truly lucky to see that show in D.C. with Bruce, John, REM, Pearl Jam, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, James Taylor and the Dixie Chicks. The high point of the show for me was when Bruce came out and sang Man in the Moon with REM. It was a fantastic show. Thanks for the links! Here is another version of the same song with Neil and Pearl Jam:
