2. Darkness on the Edge of Town gets my vote for most underappreciated
But I couldn't say which one is the best. There are too many good ones. I don't like Nebraska, however, because I think it's too dark and serious.

6. Well put.
Darkness on the Edge of Town gets lost in the shuffle because it came between Born to Run and The River, but conceptually it's wonderful. Classic Springsteen.

I regard Born to Run as the masterpiece, though, especially for the arrangements, and I have a real soft spot for Greetings from Asbury Park, New Jersey.

12. I remember seeing the "Greetings"
album not long after it came out in a record store and thinking 'this guy just ripped off Tim Buckley' who had an album called "Greetings from LA"................. :)

3. born to run is the best, however...
at my age i've heard nine zillion times and don't care if i ever hear from mr. springsteen again which is too bad because he's a great musician and a wonderful human being also

in his day they destroyed his impact by over exposure

4. Greetings, hands down

edit: I can't decide between Darkness and Born to Run for second place, so it's a draw.

5. The best Springsteen album is "Nebraska"
Followed by "The Ghost of Tom Joad".

I have never been the biggest Springsteen fan, but I respect much of his work, especially his political/quasi-Guthrie material. Prefer it by far over the melodramatic streets-of-Jersey operettas from his early years. As he matured and stripped away much of the dross and bombast, he improved.

7. I know the most popular is not supposed to be the best...but "Born in the USA" is his best...

10. I really like his contribution to the Woody Guthrie / Leadbelly tribute album
He does a stark, beautiful version of "I Ain't Got No Home." Even though he was a multi-millionaire at the time he does quite a convincing performance.

The official album title is "Folkways: A Vision Shared", the rest of it is quite good and worth seeking out.
