I just learned how to play recently. The variable trump suit, the Jack being the highest trump (higher than the Ace), and the same colored, off-suit Jack being an additional trump card all make the game a little confusing.

Also, what cards do you use? 9-A is what we use here, but according to Funk and Wagnall's 1982 Encyclopedia 7-A is proper. This would allow a larger kitty and more guesswork as to what's going down.

The key is laying the top card across (instead of up-down) when you're counting from 5 to 9, like this:



And we play using the cards 9 to Ace, I didn't know you could play using the 7 and the 8 also. So I guess the kitty would be 12 cards instead of 4? Interesting. That would certainly allow a heck of a lot of trump cards to be hidden in that kitty. I might suggest that variation the next time I'm playing. :)
