8:50 am, on the first day of classes, on my first day of college
as a full-time WVU Freshman.

I am 28 years old.
My tummy is a bit fluttery.
I bought the first backpack I've owned in ELEVEN YEARS the other day.
I can't believe it's really all real.
I catch the city bus and head to my first class at about 11:25 am.

Wish me luck!!!!!!!

3. I think that's what I'd do too if I went back to school
Or maybe history.

4. I seriously thought about English
and I still might either double-major in English, or at least minor in it. But social justice and civil rights are my truest, deepest interests. Therefore I'd like a degree that can help me to help others.

6. I think English and Political science are good foundations
for law school if you ever wanted to go that route.

10. I've considered it
I just wish I knew more about what law school is like. I don't want to get into something that's going to make me miserable, ya know?

7. good for you
We college instructors really like you students who are a bit older. More serious, more interested in learning (rather than just a grade).

8. Thanks for that!
I'd been feeling a bit awkward about the fact that I'm 10 years older than most of my fellow Freshmen. High school was hell for me, but this is going to be WONDERFUL. I'm hoping that the days of school being more of a fashion show than a learning environment are dead and gone.

What do you teach, Cher?
:hi:

28. communications
Writing and research papers. Also in speech comm, first-year public speaking. My upper-level classes are group comm, media theory, social advocacy, event planning, and my graduate courses are in advertising.

Oh yes, college is way different than high school fashion shows. I think most teachers think similarly--at least that's what I pick up from the union meetings and teachers' lounge.

11. Best of luck!
You'll do great!

I always had the tummy flutteries on the first day of school.

Which reminds me, I have to go introduce myself to a roomful of first year law students today. It's their first day of school too. ;)

Anyway, you will do absolutely amazing in college. I agree...we professors really DO like the "nontraditionals" better, overall. Besides, 28 isn't that much older than most college students...I'm 29 and get mistaken for a student all the time. So you won't stick out or anything, plus you have the HUGE advantage of life experience.

Good luck! :toast:

15. Ooooo!
Me and my better half (who's also a poli-sci major) have considered law school. I'm a bit leery of it, though--I don't want to commit to something I'd wind up hating, you know? Maybe I'll sit in on a few classes (WVU has a law school too) and see what it's all about.

18. well, my advice on that
is you are a freshman! relax, enjoy your classes, learn and think, you shouldn't even be considering graduate school your freshman year.

sheesh, kids these days, so ambitious.

but when it comes time to think of all that, try to think about whether you really want to be a lawyer

22. Well, I'd love to be a lawyer
but I'm not sure about law school itself. I've heard that it's an awful lot of rote memorization, which I don't like. :(

You're right though--there's plenty of time to decide about that later.

34. That isn't rote memorization
That's the stuff you have to know, alas. i am not a lawyer, but most of my friends are, and the ones that liked studying law tend to be happier as lawyers than those that didn't really like it. And i know a lot of unhappy lawyers, unfortunately.

19. Good idea!
It's definitely a huge commitment and too many people jump in without really thinking about it. Sitting in on classes is a great idea.

I graduated umm...ugh...almost 5 years ago! JEEBUS! But I still recall it quite vividly, lol. So if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

17. You'll do fine
I was in your shoes last year. So far I've loved it, even when I'm exhausted and school is kicking my ass.

I agree with the instructors upthread that returning students tend to be much more serious about their studies.

23. Your situation is probably very similar to mine, indeed.
Especially considering that we both have little boys to raise, as well as homework, projects, and all that jazz. I'm lucky enough that I probably won't have to work a paying job for another year--ThinkBlue1966 is taking a semester off of school and working her tail off so that I can concentrate 100% on my classes. Our goal is for me to get such spectacular grades that I earn some scholarship cash, so we don't get buried by *two* huge student loan repayments when we're both done.

I went to college the first time at age 28. I maintained a 4.0 all the way through. You're in a MUCH better position life-experience wise than your 18 year old classmates. And you know what you want!
