Let's see how well you know your history (quotes)
I'll provide a famous quote, and you have to provide a) the person who said it; and b) the context of the quote.

1) "But that is violence!"

2) "But it does move."

3) "Woe is me. I think I am becoming a god."

4) "We are not amused."

5) "Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?"

6) "I will make you shorter by the head."

7) "The Pope! How many divisions has he got?"

8) "It'll be a chilla, and a killa, and a thrilla, when I get the gorilla in Manila."

1. Number 5
Edited on Mon Aug-27-07 02:45 PM by YankeyMCC
Henry VIII about Thomas Beckett who was not cooperating on his divorce plans.

I know I'm going to go "Oh yeah" when I see the answers to a few others but I can't pull them out of my head at the moment.

On Edit: I guess I was off, mixing up my English kings and their troubles with the church :) (I just looked it up)

6. Henry II, not Henry VIII!
Only off by six Henries. Of course, Henry VIII had a turbulent priest, too.

13. it was against Frazier. His use of racist stereotypes in his war of words with Frazier...
were very hurtful to him. I believe that Ali has since apologized for using the language.

I thought I picked the wrong Roman for the god quote. Someone else said it was Vespasian, not Augustus. I thought it was Victoria who was never amused.

22. Ok, here's some clues for the rest:
1) "But that is violence!"

clue: toga

2) "But it does move."

clue: round, not flat

6) "I will make you shorter by the head."

clues: Edmund Spenser, Virginia

24. You got Quote #2 correct!
Galileo was forced to say in front of the church inquisition that the Earth does not move, but is rumored to have also said (under his breath), "But it does move."

The other quotes have previously been answered, with #3 being Vespasian.

29. Without Googling or viewing the other replies:
1. Julius Caesar, after the first stab wound.
2. Galileo Galilei, repudiating his own repudiation of the heliocentric theory. BTW, this is a legend; he probably never said it. If he whispered it, who heard him?
3. Emperor Vespasian of Rome, on his death bed.
4. Queen Elizabeth II. Woman has no sense of humor.
5. King Henry II of England, in regards to Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury.
6. Richard III.
7. Adolph Hitler.
8. Muhammed Ali.

How'd I do?

Edited on Tue Aug-28-07 02:22 PM by brentspeak
Yes, it was Julius Caesar who yelled out, "But that is violence!" after the first Senate assassin attacked him.

Number 6 still waiting to be answered.

You did pretty well for answers off the top of your head. It was Stalin, not Hitler, who made the comment about how many divisions has the Pope got. And it was Victoria, not Elizabeth II (hint, hint), who said "We are not amused." The others, except for number 6, you got right.

34. Actually he didn't say "will no-one rid me of this turbulent priest?"
What Henry II actually said was:

"What miserable drones and traitors have I nourished and brought up in my household who allow their lord to be treated with such shameful contempt by a low-born cleric!"

So I read in "A History of Britain" (pub. BBC) by Simon Schama, anyway.

He was referring to Samuel Beckett, his longtime friend whom he appointed Archbishop of Canterbury. Beckett believed that the church answered only to the Pope and thus to God, whereas Henry thought that the church should answer to the King.
