Tom Waits said, on the LA radio show Morning Becomes Eclectic, that one must move beyond the awareness that one is making music and become friends with the songs that come to say hello, or they'll move on to someone else. That you have to set yourself aside and not think about it. To be aware enough to not be derailed by awareness.

And that for some, there is not enough awareness for them to know that they're part of a process, and naivete allows for a career. That may not always work as a result of not actually knowing what's going on, and of the process itself.

(and I really felt that Prince did make "new" friends when he made music... He never seems to repeat himself. It's as though when someone asks you, "Do you like Prince?" you have to ask, "Which CD?"
