1. this confirms it
the martians have long been suspected of having gigantic deflated beachballs.

3. Doesn't the lander come down in sort of a giant beachball?
That bounces a few times before it deflates once it comes to rest?

4. Actually
The circular shapes seen on the martian surface are imprints left by the Mars Rover Opportunity's airbags during landing on Jan. 24, 2004 in these images released on Wednesday Jan. 28, 2004. th-received time. The circular region of the flower-like feature on the right is about the size of a basketball. (AP Photo/Nasa)

7. You know what's really interesting to me about the imprints?
They don't appear to be very deep, although I'd assume the lander hits the ground with a reasonable amount of force (if it bounces a few times, it is traveling faster than 'floating down').

That would seem to indicate that the ground where they are is fairly solidly packed, as opposed to having a lot of loose material on top of it (or there should be more 'splash' around the edge of the imprint, I'd think). Just not what I would have expected. I guess I'd thought the ground would have a lot of loose dust on top.

5. The Viking LR Experiment Detected Life
But the NASA officials tried to say it was from a chemical reaction. Why did they not include a biology experiment on the rovers? Confirmation of microbial life would draw a lot more interest and dollars to their program than discovering the mineral olivine. Guess NASA will always try to cover up the truth about ET life.

I agree that the circles are from the airbag landing system.
