What is Your Favorite Local or not so Local Tavern? DIAL UP WARNING!!!!!
Edited on Fri Sep-28-07 06:16 PM by Gilligan
Where and when did you last go there??? What makes it special... the smell of stale cigarette smoke? The aroma of Pine Sol in the bathroom? The charm of the barkeep? The local patronage?

My favorite place is called Casa Machado - it is a funky bar in a Mexican restaurant at the local small plane airfield here -- Best drinks and food around! It is just a comfy place to hang out and talk to the locals -

Here I am with bartender Juan Carlos

1. Peak's in Port Angeles, WA
Though it's not local for me, it was a surrogate during my days working on tankers. We'd spend plenty of time in P.A., and Peak's was the best place in town. Good jukebox, wonderful local brews, and friendly people. The owner took a bit of pride in saying that he never let any assholes into the place.

3. That one:

What makes it special?

They have a wonderful drink called a Flaming Moe's and

the owner is sometime receiving strange phone calls:

-Uh, hello. Is Mike there? Last name, Rotch.
-Hold on, I'll check. Mike Rotch! Mike Rotch! Hey, has anyone seen Mike Rotch lately?

-Uh, yes I'm looking for a friend of mine. Last name Jass, first name Hugh.
-Hold on, I'll check (to crowd) Hugh Jass. Hey, I wanna Hugh Jass. Oh, someone check the men's room for a Hugh Jass.

5. The Brothers, The Old Mill Tavern, and the 2AM Club
The first two have closed, and the third, the 2AM Club changed hands when Goose sold it to a jerk. Thankfully the had enough smarts to keep the famous Charlie Deal guitar on the wall, the same guitar featured on Huey Lewis and the News album 'Sports'. If you look close you can catch "The Catch" on the TV.

7. Someone once said that he'd never belong to any club that would
have him as a member. By the same token, I could never respect a bar that would let me in the door twice...

8. The Tavern in Newport, R.I.
Great music, cheap beer and a lot of fun. Even got banned once - that was a rough night for damn sure! LOL!

Also have to mention the Narragansett Cafe, or the "Nasty Narry" as we called it. Hoisted a lot of cold ones in that place too. It's right on the waterfront.

13. Mine was down at the end of my street
It was called Wexlers. But thanks to the great American smoke ban, it just went under. I would like to thank the smoke Nazis for closing my bar and putting my friends out of business. There are many more small family owned businesses going down too. I hope your fresh smelling clothes are as sweet as my friend's welfare checks

36. I am not a smoker
but I hated the smoke ban for the reasons cited here... I saw several local places die due to this. Another good place here in San Diego is Bully's East - the Bully's in Del Mar has pretty much died due to the no smoking thing in the whole town of Del Mar.

I once left the country for a year and when I came back my bar was gone. I never saw many of the people who hung out there again.

22. The only one I really go to:
The Green Leafe in Williamsburg, VA. :) They have "Mug Night" every Sunday, and you can buy a keepsake mug and fill it with your choice of beer (or cider - Woodchuck is my poison!) for just a few bucks. It can get pretty loud, but it's a great atmosphere, and a really fun place to just go and hang out.

27. Mine? The Anvil...down the street from me.
It's just a block away.

The Anvil is a gay bar. It's...nothing special, decor wise. But The Anvil has...friendly bartenders, extremely reasonably priced drinks (and the bartenders don't skimp on the alcohol). And very little attitude. Friendly people. I like going there.

29. And there was Duffy's Tavern
"Duffy's Tavern, where the elite meet to eat. Archie the manager speakin'. Duffy ain't here — oh, hello, Duffy."

Duffy's Tavern, an American radio situation comedy (CBS, 1941-1942; NBC-Blue Network, 1942-1944; NBC, 1944-1952), often featured top-name stage and film guest stars but always hooked those around the misadventures, get-rich-quick-scheming, and romantic missteps of the title establishment's malaprop-prone, metaphor-mixing manager, Archie, played by the writer/actor who co-created the show, Ed Gardner.

In the show's familiar opening, "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling," either solo on an old-sounding piano or by a larger orchestra, was interrupted by the ring of a telephone and Gardner's New Yorkese accent as he answered, "Duffy's Tavern, where the elite meet to eat. Archie the manager speakin'. Duffy ain't here — oh, hello, Duffy."

Duffy, the owner, was never heard (or seen, when a film based on the show was made in 1945 or when a bid to bring the show to television was tried in 1954). But Archie always was — bantering with Duffy's man-crazy daughter, Miss Duffy (played by several actresses, beginning with Gardner's real-life first wife, Shirley Booth); with Eddie, the waiter/janitor (Eddie Green); and, especially, with Clifton Finnegan (Charlie Cantor), a likeable soul with several screws loose and a knack for falling for every other salesman's scam.

31. RJ Gator's in Melbourne Florida because I can beat the crap out of anyone....
there in bar trivia. I live for useless minutae. No pictures. I'll try to get some next time.

Last time I was there, I was having dinner with my four year old son while dad had the other two at taekwondo class. I logged in as "Go Sox" and ripped the shred out of the previous round winner "Boston." When the game finished here comes this young kid carrying his game board through th restaurant. He found me and said, "Thank goodness the chick who beat me is a Boston fan."

Well first things first. I am hardly a chick. I could have given birth to this child. Secondly, I tried to enter "Go Dems" but it was too many characters. My husband is the Red Sox fan. Thirdly, what if I were a White Sox fan? Bostonians are so self-centered. ;)
