4. It's regional.
I have this conversation often. When I say it, it's "carmel". But you New Englanders add letters and syllables. Either way, it tastes the same. :)

5. sometimes I say care-mul
when I'm talking too fast.. like the middle A is silent  and I have an accent too so I probably sound wrong. But I never say "car-mel", that IS wrong.

7. According to my dictionary, both are correct.
However, I believe a chef named Carem developed caramel, so I think it is more correct to use the 3-syllable pronunciation.

9. It's spelled caramel, but pronounced carmel.
Edited on Sat Nov-24-07 10:56 PM by Rabrrrrrr
At least, in my opinion that's how it should be. Hearing it pronounced car-a-mel drives me up a wall, like hearing pecan pronounce "pee-KAN" with a long duration "pee" and KAN pronounced with that awful southern nasal "a" instead of the more gentle "ah" and emphasis on the last syllable. I prefer p'-kahn or PEE-kahn.

pee-KAN. Ewwww.

14. I'm weird
if its inside a piece of candy, I call it carmel. If its a warn, golden sauce for putting on ice cream, I say caramel.

But onions are always carmelized.

16. But it's Mt Carmel, IL
It's a little town outside Chicago.

It's not Mt Caramel. :P

I know it's spelled CARE -Ah- MEL. But at this point I would sound very pretentious if I started to pronounce it that way.
