Poll question: On a scale of 1-5 how funny do you find constant thinly veiled sexual innuendo?

not just a reference to the lounge but also to real life

1. Depends. Is the innuendo itself supposed to be funny? ... (edit)
Edited on Mon Nov-26-07 09:45 AM by Deep13
Or is it the fact that someone is making a socially crude remark funny?

I find the running afoul of social propriety to be funny, not the innuendo itself which is usually pretty hackneyed.

Post script- I overlooked the word "constant." It's not funny when its predictable. If it's not funny, then it is just tedious.

2. Take it or leave it
Most of my perception is individual based. If thinly veiled sex talk is ALL they ever seem to talk about, then they're a bore. Hey, get a hobby or something, man.

3. Depends on the context.
At work - totally inappropriate.

Among friends after some libations - I can giggle.

Splattered all over the place and the ONLY way some grown men and women communicate - gagfest.

15. Ah, I thought the Lounge context was inclusive.
I'd expected virtual reality to one day bring us helmets (or the sensory equivalent) where you could mute or delete things that bother you. I've since seen this in a story, in a different form. Until then, "hell is other people", as the wise man said. Too many rats in a small cage, requiring transcendence of the situation and its effects.

16. Not funny anyplace where one can get sued for doing it.
Not funny in any sort of business relationship. Not funny with any gathering of tight-ass Midwestern acquaintances. It can be funny with friends with whom one is comfortable letting ones hair down. Caveat: Things that are funny do not become more funny by repetition.

19. Depends on the context, I guess
It's it is fun & friendly and the people know each other, it's fine. Other situations, it depends, I guess.

Any sexual innuendo directed at me is welcome, of course - thinly veiled or not. But, I don't recall it ever happening to me here on DU.

I'm usually too dense in real life to pick up on any innuendo from women, and the gay men that have hit on me in my younger days haven't exactly been thinly veiled.

It has a time and a place, though subtlety is an essential part. using it as a crutch to hide the fact that a person is actually devoid of humour is just boring.

A couple of comments--funny. A few more after that--halfhearted laughs. But when it goes on for-ev-er, then I just want to put the person on an ice floe and float 'em out to sea.

For example, here in the lounge. I may not find some of it funny but then again there are several lounge aspects that don't interest me that much.

IRL, I agree with Deep13, minus the tight-ass relatives. Those are a rare commodity in my family thankfully.

37. it really doesn't matter to me
if someone wants to express themselves that way, fine, let them.

even if they do it over and over and over.

at least they become predictable that way.

i've never been one to get pissy about "why are they ruining my online experience?"

i've known for many years that reality does not conform to my desires. people pretty much are gonna do what they want. so why get upset about it?

40. you'd have to define "thinly" in terms someone simple like me could follow
to me

thinly veiled could mean so many different things, as some people are more prudish than others and might even mistake something that wasn't sexual innuendo as such.

as for funny, it depends on the context, what is said, what you mean by thinly veiled, etc.

In the lounge, I think that there is hypersensitivity lately to any sexual innuendo. Something that seems rather prudish to me.

I mean, the hide thread feature works on my computer well.

So do ignore, double ignore, and triple ignore.

As long as someone is within the rules of posting in the lounge, then they have a right to post what they want to and not think that there should be some "groupthink" of what is okay to post about in the lounge as long as it is kosher within the rules.

Now, I just live in Arkansas and I don't really know what you might be referring to, but I've been around long enough to know that everything is said or written in reference to something.

So in order to really be able to vote in your poll, I'd need to know more about what you are saying is "thinly veiled" sexual innuendo

:hi:

48. Sexual innuendo *can* be funny if it's done correctly.
That is to say that it's never always funny unless you are the emotional equivalent of a 13 year old boy.

For example, I remember one of the Baldwins (Daniel maybe?) being in a sketch comedy show (was it The State?) where his character had a catch-phrase of "I wanna dip my balls in it". The sketch was funny, because it was making fun of some office loser who resorted to that sort of base humor on every occasion. The sketch was funny because it was lampooning a dumbass who was decidedly not funny.

Additionally, there's the more recent example of Steve Carrell (Michael) on The Office with his unfunny go to phrase of "That's what she said." Again, REAL comedians/writers are pointing out the idiocy of the sadsacks who resort to tired old "dick jokes" as a means of gaining acceptance and/or popularity in one way or another.

That said, I'm a huge fan of dick/fart jokes. They just need to be FUNNY. Not 13 year-old funny, but actually funny. Humor and sexual innuendo often cross paths, but they are NOT the same thing. I don't wanna hear about your dick, tits, ballsack, ass, vag, or anything else unless it Makes Me Laugh. (And, no, I'm not 13.) If you don't know the difference, you're probably doing it wrong.
