Would You Recommend Your Auto Insurance Company?
Are you happy with your service and rates? Or are you being ripped off?

2. Absolutely!
USAA. But you need to be military or a family member of someone in the military for the auto insurance.

25. What problems have you had?
I've been pretty happy with them. Rates are reasonable and service is excellent.

27. Geez, I was just gonna say how great State Farm is.
We have our homeowners, car, life, etc. with them.

We even like our broker.

33. Me too...
My agent has always worked with me to get the best deal possible. They dealt with the other guy's insurance company when he ran a red light and I plowed into him.

Years ago, my husband had an accident with a tractor trailer when he was covered by Geico. He was not at fault; but the car was totaled, and they dropped him like a hot potato. He was going to pick up lousy insurance from some second rate company, but my State Farm agent recommended that he try insuring himself via the Fire and Casualty company for a 2 year period, after which he'd be eligible for the State Farm Mutual policy with the multiple car discount.

I think they're great.

3. I have Kemper
I don'tknow that they're stellar; I've only had to file a claim to replace a cracked windshield 5 years ago. That went ok. The glass people came to my job, replaced the windshield and filed the paperwork.

Other than that I just pay my premiums. They leave me alone.

The premiums were a bit pricey, but the service was great.

6. I have ITT Hartford and I would not recommend them.
They almost doubled my rates this year. I have not had any tickets or accidents. But they said they increased their rates by 10% and also that my mileage was higher than last year.

They are cheap. Also check out Tristate if you live near NY and have a perfect driving record.

12. I've been very happy with GEICO, too.
Very low rates compared to other companies, and so far, I've had good service.

9. I haven't actually had to put in a claim yet...
So I couldn't say whether or not I'd actually recommend it. While I was able to get lower premiums with Progressive than some of the others, and I was able to register online (and not have to deal with a pesky insurance agent), they might suck if I actually have to use my insurance to pay for something.

BTW... I agree that State Farm sucks. When we first moved, I tried to get renter's and auto insurance from them (figured it'd be cheaper, having both with the same company). They refused to sell us renter's (citing something about how they weren't selling it to anyone at that time), and gave me a runaround on auto, saying I'd have to obtain letters from all of my previous insurance companies saying that I have a clean driving record. :wtf: This was AFTER they told me that the price they had quoted me for insurance was too low (my quote had apparently included a discount that they offer, but never give out - I swear, that's what the agent told me!), and it would actually be about $250 higher. Definitely NOT worth it!

10. Yes - with Safeco.
My mother was an independent insurance agent and she always said they were the best company. I have had them on my car and house for 30 years and they have always paid up quickly, with no hassle and paid for things I didn't think they would (didn't have to). We have had a couple of car accidents through the years and had to deal with other companies and found out what they were like. What a pain in the arse. Permanent General is a horrible one. Can't remember the others right off.

11. fairly happy with mine, but
i'm with State Farm in NC and the local news reported last nite a statewide increase of 10% was on the way.
It's been asked by the ins.commission 3 times over the last 3 years, and each year it's been lowered by more than the increase requested, so i'm not sweating this one....yet.

But, i have a general question to anyone who has dealt with a situation like this: My daughter is on my ins policy. Her car was hit in a parking lot where she works and the person responsible came in her shop and asked if the owner was there. She went out to look at the damage, and exchanged ins. info with them. First the person asked to settle without involving ins. co's. She was bright enough to decline, and got the info, told me about it. I contacted the responsible party's ins. co, and the caseworker contacted me yesterday. The first words, the first question out of his mouth: "Why didn't you want to settle without contacting ins. co?" ????
Offered to contact the responsible party for me if we'd settle without ins. etc.

I told him i'd think about it, but get a damage est. first. He gave me a company that they said they'd accept whatever estimate was given from them alone, but i could get one elsewhere. I took the number, said i'd get back with him.
The next day, the suggested body shop called me wanting to set up an appt to have the car seen...I ignored the message on my answering machine for now.

Should i be wary of this insurance co's tactics? Is this normal for the way it's handled?

any advice or info appreciated.

23. I'll ditto State Farm. Had it for probably 20 years.
The good thing about SF is that it's one of the few remaining mutual insurance companies. That means if they make more money than needed to pay off claims, they refund the difference to policyholders.

You have to be current or ex-military or married to the same for benefits to apply.

I love them. No other company can compare with their level of value and service.

Really happy with their rates and service. No one can beat their rates. It's one of the benefits of having a dad who's a vet.

I'm sorry to hear they don't make it easy for your partner, though.

32. USAA for over 30 years . . . can't be beat . . .
excellent rates, excellent service, and they send you a rebate check every Christmas based on company profits . . . I qualified because my dad was a retired Army officer, and once you're in you can stay with them for life . . . also use them for my homeowners insurance . . . wouldn't think of even looking at any other company . . .

29. 21st Century has been pretty good to me. They've paid for one truck
that got stolen, at fair market value, and really has good policies in place for when it was stolen. I had a rental car at my door within 20 minutes, paid for, for a whole month.

With my rear-ending, it was taken care of very well, although the dealership doing the repairs took longer than I liked.

Also, my own lack of the BEST coverage hampered my financial recovery from the rear-ending. Had I had medical coverage, my costs would have been far better compensated and sought after, and the insurance co would have been my lawyer on it.

I learned the hard way, GET MEDICAL COVERAGE ON YOUR AUTO INSURANCE. A LOT of it.

Even though you have HEALTH insurance, your car insurance co won't advocate for your injury costs in an auto accident.

30. Progressive rocks
Low rates, and they took care of EVERYTHING when I had a wreck late last year. Checked on the repair status, made sure I had a loaner rental car ready, extended the rental reimbursement when the repairs weren't done in 30 days, followed up with me after I got the car back...they are very much into customer service. What a shock.
