my car leaked about a half a tank of gas today
smelled gas when i got into the car this morning, didn't think a whole lot about it (yeah, maybe that's bad). went to run an errand midday, got back to the car and i see gas that looks like it had streamed from my car....ok, freak out time.

i lost nearly a half tank of gas going the four-ish miles from where i was to my dad's so i could get the spare car. turns out a hose had come loose and my dad fixed it in about 10 minutes...but damn, it was one scary drive to his house :scared:

5. Fuel pump inlet/outlet hose?
Unusual for those to just loosen up... if they had the right clamps.

6. it was the outlet hose, i think
it was clamped all the way down, the hose hadn't been changed in gods know how long. he just clipped the ends and re-clamped them, all better

7. Yup
Usually they'll crack either right at the end, if some doofus pushed the hose too far onto the fitting and smushed it, or about 1/2"-3/4" from the end, where the fitting flares. Either way, you just snip 'n' re-fit.

Moral: Check hoses. And belts.

9. Oh — one thing about hose clamps
If they're so tight that they look like a waist cincher, with the hose bulging on either side of 'em, they're too tight and will eventually cause cracks.

More unsolicited advice from Clunk and Clank, Teh Longue shade-tree mechanics. :silly:
