Poll question: have you ever skipped jury duty?
don't count legitimately used exceptions. i'm talking about making up an excuse to avoid sitting in a jury pool. if you were only summoned but not seated, vote no.

1. I show up for jury duty. I wish I had a juror like myself if I were on trial
Plus, it is an opportunity to change the system. I was on a drug trial (simple mj possession) and I loved being able to help keep a guy out of jail for something that should be legal anyway.

Show up when called. You might be saving someone from an injust system.

17. I did the same thing
Didn't put it in my appointment book, moved, and I found the summons a month later. They sent me another for another date. I served.

5. They arrest people for that here
Don't skip jury duty. It's the one time you, the average citizen, have a say in what actually happens in the legal system. Each party has their own attorney to represent them, the judge represents the State/Federal government by following the law, so you in the jury box are the only ones to represent the People in a civil or criminal case.

7. Gee, and the assumption is the loungers would shirk their responsibilities
But I'll bet 2 donuts that it's the loudest people in GD that skip jury duty.

A pat on the back to ethical, responsible loungers --my dear loungers!

8. I would personally never skip jury duty,
but I could see someone in GD making an argument for skipping.

I could even make one if I wanted!

9. Thankya! :)
I agree with the civic duty and the chance to change the system and unjust laws, but I'm also afraid of being arrested

10. The only time I was summoned for jury duty, it was cancelled at the last minute...
So I never served on a jury, and never had to use any exceptions either.

14. Nope, I've been seated on a bunch of juries.
I even got to be foreperson once. It's not all it's cracked up to be though, they were fairly contentious groups of people. It's a lot like being locked in GD for a few days discussing Hillary and Oprah.

Unfortunately, it was for a date two weeks after I was moving to South Dakota. So I couldn't attend. But I wanted to.

I get to ride the bus downtown and not go to work and meet weird people (hopefully). All of that is good.

Ok well no... I wouldn't have to ride the bus downtown anymore, cause I'm in BFE... but when I have received summonses I lived in Dallas so it was more fun.

19. I've done jury duty three times
Around here it isn't optional and you'd need a damned good reason to get out of it--there was a doctor in one of the jury pools I was in who couldn't get excused, either. I'm also pretty sure they swear out a warrant for your arrest if you don't show up.

20. My dear MrCoffee!
I always go!

I've been on two civil court cases, but no criminal ones...

The lawyers don't like nurses!

But I always go...

It's a fascinating part of our society...

21. Yes, accidentally.
I moved from California to Florida and when my mail was forwarded (it took a couple of months for that to start), I found a jury summons (for California). I figured that since I had moved to a different state, it no longer mattered. So I didn't even bother to call. I figure that if they had sent someone to come get me, I would have been long gone. In fact, I think I moved before the date I was supposed to go.

22. You skip jury duty here, they issue a bench warrant and send someone to get you.
I watched the judge do it more than once.

24. I show up but am never picked
Edited on Tue Dec-11-07 01:47 PM by dropkickpa
I was a key witness in a felony armed robbery trial along with being a witness in several smaller theft trials (ahhh, retail management was AAWESOME!!), so a lot of defense lawyers in criminal cases run like hell from me. I don't think I've been in a civil case jury pool. I was on jury duty for 2 weeks for a federal petit jury, but that was just a call-in and check if you're needed thing, and my number never came up.

When you are assigned to courts martial duty you do not "skip." Since retirement I've served on two jury pools but was never selected.

29. I've never been called.
As a future lawyer, I probably won't ever be seated on a jury (even though I am one of the most even-handed people you'd ever meet), but you never know...my crim prof got called last year, for a criminal trial. He said it gave him good insight into why jury instructions, and the way they're handled these days, are just bad ideas overall.
