Musician was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer three years ago

LOS ANGELES - Singer-songwriter Dan Fogelberg, famed for the soaring vocals and elegant instrumentation of tunes such as “Longer” and “A Love Like This,” died on Sunday, three years after being diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer. He was 56.

“He fought a brave battle with cancer and died peacefully at home in Maine with his wife Jean at his side,” said a posting on his Web site. “His strength, dignity and grace in the face of the daunting challenges of this disease were an inspiration to all who knew him.”

Fogelberg, a native of Peoria, Illinois, broke into the music industry in the early 1970s, at a time when it was embracing introspective songwriting, or “soft rock,” by such acts as the Eagles and America.

Fogelberg, who distinguished himself with his angelic vocals and lyrics that celebrated beauty and romance, hit his commercial and creative peak in 1981 with “The Innocent Age,” which yielded three top-10 singles, “Hard to Say,” “Same Old Lang Syne” and “Leader of the Band.” His most recent release, “Full Circle,” came out in 2003. The following year, he revealed that he had been diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer, and urged men over the age of 50 to get tested for the disease.

4. Wow!! This is sad.
I knew a lot of people who went to the high school where his father taught in Peoria. Everyone who knew him spoke so highly of him. Personally, as well as his music.

And only 56. Sad.

5. RIP, Dan. Thanks for "Longer"
Longer than there's been fishes in the ocean
Higher than any bird ever flew
Longer than there's been stars up in the heavens
Ive been in love with you.

Stronger than any mountain cathedral
Truer than any tree ever grew
Deeper than any forest primeval
I am in love with you.

Ill bring fires in the winters
Youll send showers in the springs
Well fly through the falls and summers
With love on our wings.

Through the years as the fire starts to mellow
Burning lines in the book of our lives
Though the binding cracks and the pages start to yellow
Ill be in love with you.

Longer than there's been fishes in the ocean
Higher than any bird ever flew
Longer than there's been stars up in the heavens
Ive been in love with you
I am in love with you..

Also, thanks for "Twin Sons of Different Mothers" you
did with Tim Weisburg. You defined my life then. Thanks.

Same Old Lang Syne

(Dan Fogelberg)

Met my old lover in the grocery store,
The snow was falling Christmas Eve.
I stole behind her in the frozen foods,
And I touched her on the sleeve.

She didn't recognize the face at first,
But then her eyes flew open wide.
She went to hug me and she spilled her purse,
And we laughed until we cried.

We took her groceries to the checkout stand,
The food was totalled up and bagged.
We stood there lost in our embarrassment,
As the conversation dragged.

We went to have ourselves a drink or two,
But couldn't find an open bar.
We bought a six-pack at the liquor store,
And we drank it in her car.

We drank a toast to innocence,
We drank a toast to now.
And tried to reach beyond the emptiness,
But neither one knew how.

She said she'd married her an architect,
Who kept her warm and safe and dry,
She would have liked to say she loved the man,
But she didn't like to lie.

I said the years had been a friend to her,
And that her eyes were still as blue.
But in those eyes I wasn't sure if I saw,
Doubt or gratitude.

She said she saw me in the record stores,
And that I must be doing well.
I said the audience was heavenly,
But the traveling was hell.

We drank a toast to innocence,
We drank a toast to now.
And tried to reach beyond the emptiness,
But neither one knew how.
We drank a toast to innocence,
We drank a toast to time.
Reliving in our eloquence,
Another 'auld lang syne'......

The beer was empty and our tongues were tired,
And running out of things to say.
She gave a kiss to me as I got out,
And I watched her drive away.
Just for a moment I was back at school,
And felt that old familiar pain .........
And as I turned to make my way back home,
The snow turned into rain ..............

22. From Dan Fogelberg's Website in 2004
"Now for the sermon.

To each and every man....

I cannot encourage you strongly enough to get a DRE (Digital Rectal Exam) and a PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) test EVERY YEAR.

The medical community suggests this for men over 50, but men with a family history of prostate cancer should start getting tested at age 40.

The PSA test is a simple blood test...it only takes a minute or two. The DRE, okay, every man squirms at the thought of this exam, but hey, it too takes only a minute or two, and IT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE.

Prostate cancer can be very slow growing or very aggressive, but detected early while it is still confined to the prostate gland, it can usually be treated and cured successfully.

Once it spreads beyond the prostate it is called Advanced Prostate Cancer (PCa). At this point it becomes imminently more life threatening and harder to treat. Do yourself and your loved ones a huge favor and GET CHECKED REGULARLY. I promise you, you DON’T want to go through what I’m going through if you can avoid it.

Education and awareness are key, I urge you to follow the link below to the Prostate Cancer Foundation web site and read up on how best to protect yourself and reduce your likelihood of contracting this terrible disease."

23. Damn, I was so hopeful
I was a fan of his for 33 years. Saw him in concert 3 times. Passed by his Colorado home twice. To me, he represented emotional growth.

Hard to comment further other than I wish his family peace during this difficult time of his passing.

Leader of the Band.

30. Heart Hotels was one of my favorites
Well there's too many windows
in this old hotel
And rooms filled with reckless pride
And the walls have grown sturdy
And the halls have worn well
But there is nobody living inside
Nobody living inside...

Gonna pull in the shutters
On this heart of mine
Roll up the carpets and pull
in the blinds
And retreat to the chambers that
I left behind
In hopes there still may be
Love left to find
Still may be love left to find.

Seek inspiration in daily affairs
Now your soul is improper
and requires repairs
And the voices you hear at the
top of the stairs
Are only echoes of unanswered prayers
Echoes of unanswered prayers.

Well there's too many windows
in this old hotel
And rooms filled with reckless pride
And the walls have grown sturdy
And the halls have worn well
But there is nobody living inside
Nobody living inside...

32. I remember listening to Fogelberg primarily because of his association with Joe Walsh...
...I was a big Walsh fan, and if he played on an album, I checked it out. Fogelberg's one more figure from my wild years who's no longer with us. I'm reminded of the Eagles' song "My Man," which founding member Bernie Leadon wrote in memory of Gram Parsons:

I once knew a man, very talented guy
He’s sing for the people and people would cry
They knew that his song came from deep down inside
You could hear it in his voice and see it in his eyes

And so he traveled along, touch your heart, then be gone
Like a flower, he bloomed till that old hickory wind
Called him home

My man’s got it made
He’s gone far beyond the pain
And we who must remain go on living just the same
We who must remain go on laughing just the same

R.I.P., Dan.

35. Dan Fogelberg was my first favorite artist and I have loved him ever since...
I have all of his albums as he released them throughout the years. And then I had to go back and repurchase them as CDs. Now I'm trying to remember which one that it was that I bought as a CD first-- I think it was Windows and Walls....

His was the first concert I'd ever attended. I can mark the chapters of my life by his music-- God, I shall miss him!

Thank you for the music, and RIP Dan Fogelberg.

38. My first Fogelberg song I ever heard in 1977 is probably my favorite

Nether Lands

Nether Lands

High on this mountain
The clouds down below
I'm feeling so strong and alive
From this rocky perch
I'll continue to search
For the wind and the snow and the sky
Oh I want a lover and I want some friends
And I want to live in the sun
And I want to do all the things that I never have done
Sunny bright mornings and pale moonlit nights
Keep me from feeling alone
Now I'm learning to fly and this freedom is like
Nothing that I've ever known
Oh I've seen the bottom and I've been on top
But mostly I've lived in between
And where do you go when you get to the end of your dream
Off in the Nether Lands I heard the sound
Like the beating of heavenly wings
And deep in my brain I can hear a refrain
Of my soul as she rises and sings
Anthems to glory and anthems to love
And hymns filled with earthly delight
Like the songs that the darkness composes to worship the light
Once in a vision I came on some woods
And stood at a fork in the road
My choices were clear yet I froze with the fear
Of not knowing which way to go
Oh, one road was simple acceptance of life
The other road offered sweet peace
When I made my decision
My vision became my release

This is such a sad day for music. RIP Dan.
