Mrs R got her Christmas bonus from her job today:
A Toshiba "Regza" 37-inch LCD HDTV.

And just in time, too; our current 16-year-old TV has a screen that's all purple until you smack it a good one on the right side, then the colors clear up. And it makes random, loud popping noises.

I guess if you have to work for someone, it's a good idea to work for someone who has tons o'bucks.

4. Nah, we're not going to pay the extra $$ for HD programming; we don't watch
TV enough to make it worth the expense.

I'll just be happy to not have to beat on the TV to get the color to come on.

9. Actually, you can just hook up an old pair of rabbit ears to it and get the over the air HD signal
assuming you are close enough to any of the TV stations to get the signal. If you still have one of the old tower type antennas on the house, you can hook it up to that as well. The over the air HD signal is often much better than what you get from the satellite or cable.

If the TV has a QAM tuner and you have basic cable, you can add a splitter to the line and run the cable line to the QAM tuner, you can get HD local channels off of that too.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QAM_tuner

Both options are free as far as monthly fees, you just need to have the right equipment. It's worth trying it out if you can, you'll love the difference in the picture.

2. That's great!!
My bonus comes from parishioners. The moderator sends out a letter in early December, asking for gifts for my bonus. I get what they send in. Last year, it was huge. I'm bracing myself for it being smaller this year, because of the conflict last summer--which some will never get over.

Your wife must be much appreciated! Congrats!

7. She's saved him way over $100K in the last few years, by being a GOOD
bookkeeper, unlike any of the others he's ever had.

(He's a developer of expensive houses, so you can imagine the amounts of money that go into and out of the business. Just by paying attention to detail (such as taking prompt-payment discounts from vendors) and being honest, she really HAS saved him that much money.)

11. And it's "Green," too. Only draws 100 watts when on, and half a watt on standby.

6. Nice. :)
I had an old computer monitor that would do that, only red not purple. Just a loose wire or something. Smack it hard enough and it behaved for a while. :)

12. It's this time of year that I miss working for the investment bank.
Those bonuses were nice.

Congratulations on the TV! That's a hell of a Christmas bonus gift. And an odd one, too. Does she work at an electronic retailer or some other place that makes a TV make sense?

14. No, he's a developer / builder. But he knew our old TV is about to crap out, and that
we weren't going to buy a very fancy one to replace it (because we don't watch much TV, not because we can't afford to buy a good one) and, being a nice guy, told her "hey, the Patriots game would look better on this one, so that will be your bonus this year."

15. I'll let my 23-year-old son set it up tomorrow; it's too much tech for me
me to deal with. But I'm sure it's going to look good and make Mrs R very happy watching the Patriots play this weekend.

16. My dear Redstone!
That is a most wonderful and generous gift!

I know you will love the HD, if you set it up to get that...

We don't watch much TV either, but HD is fabulous...

BTW, I sent the cards out Monday, so you should have yours by weeks-end...

Happy Holidays!
