Poll question: Are you hiding food from a household member? (excluding candy!)
Edited on Tue Jan-01-08 12:42 PM by Breeze54
My sister told me that research shows that the majority of females in the USA are hiding food from their male household members.

I'm wondering if that's true for DUers?

2. Only if it is "special"...
such as candy or a pastry. I always make sure he gets his share but if I don't "hide" mine, he'll it it too!

3. So, you do hide food sometimes, right?

I'm just wondering because my son is eating everything in sight! :P

Hence the discussion about food consumption! ;)

7. Yes, I do
on occasion. As I said, though, it is only special stuff. He is always given "his" portion and I hide mine. So yes, I am a hider of food.

6. Only the dog
She's sitting here right now, begging (expecting...) Cheez-Its.

A crinkle of a wrapper, the opening of the 'fridge, the ting of a plate being set on the counter...
She'll be there! :scared:

11. I have never done that and never will.
Even if DH would have to be on a restricted diet, I wouldn't hide it, I'd just not buy it.

I didn't even do that when my boys were teenagers and eating me out of house and home. I do wonder though if others do that or just don't have food available. Kids always came here and ate..making their comments that we always had food in the house and they didn't. Heh..I can remember walking into the kitchen and seeing one girl eating chili-mac right out of the pan.

13. Wow! A loaded comment.
1.) "I wouldn't hide it, I'd just not buy it."

Isn't that the same thing though?
Do you mean you would buy it for yourself if you had the chance?

2.) "or just don't have food available. Kids always came here and ate."
So, someone may have been hiding/withholding food from them?

We've ALL eaten food out of the pan! :P

Thanks! :hi:

15. Hiding it would be different than not buying it.
Hiding it suggests the female is keeping it for herself or thinking the male is eating too much of it. Not buying it is simply not having it available for either male or female.

I've known a couple people who didn't keep much food in their house and they had kids. A neighbor, who always ate out, used to say that it was cheaper for 4 of them to eat out than to buy food at the store. Another, a former Sil, bought what was to be eaten that day and that was it. Her fridge and freezer were always empty or near empty.

One with serious issues would be my daughter's ex-Mil. Her kids looked darn near malnourished in their high school photos. She would stop and eat her Mickey D's or whatever on her way home from work and talk about it. Meanwhile, whatever she did cook, she'd limit everyone's portions and then freeze the rest..under lock. My daughter lived with her now-ex at their house for a while. She lost 30lbs that she couldn't afford to lose, and that was with her eating one meal here when she'd stop by daily after work. She weighed something like 95lbs when they moved out. Her coworkers thought she had become anorexic. Here's something I now find funny, My daughter won a side of beef at a fair and gave it to his parent's since she was living there. She and her now ex never saw any of it.

My problem is having too much food in the house. I need to hide it from me!

17. That makes a lot of sense too.
Edited on Tue Jan-01-08 02:11 PM by Breeze54
What a beotch the MIL was, hey? That's just stingy and cruel! I'm sorry your daughter went through that.
I hear you about hiding food from you & me! ;) Especially with the holidays and the candy! argh!
But the thing is I buy food and then it's gone but I barely get one taste. and then poof...it's gone!
My son is buying takeout and then also eating everything in site at home. That's what started this
conversation. She was telling me to not buy anything and I'm having a problem with that. I guess she
wants me to wean him! :P

21. Have you talked with him about it?
I know as my kids got older, they learned to say "hey this is mine, don't eat it" or they'd ask if anyone had any claims on certain food/s found in the fridge before they'd scarf it down. I had to tell them not to eat certain things because either there was enough for another meal or their Dad or I was going to take it for lunch the next day. I can remember seeing names on certain items in the fridge..especially take out leftovers. We had 3 teenagers at one time, and things could get pretty hectic/chaotic around here, so it was easier to either label or ask.

24. Yes, I have talked to him....
Edited on Tue Jan-01-08 04:25 PM by Breeze54
He was amazed that he had pay his share of the rent "again'!

I couldn't believe it. I mean, he actually thought that was a one time deal!! wtf?

I know I've had many talks with him about managing money etc. and he finally got a checking account.

The thing is he's basically an only child even though he does have brothers but they are 8 & 10 yrs.

older and off on their own now; so he's not getting that sibling encouragement that the older two had.

He does exhibit sibling "one up" behavior but it's with ME!!

That isn't okay with me so it digresses into a Mom lecture and him blowing me off.

It's like we're on a ferris wheel... round and round.....

I think I'm going to have to make him sign a lease now (and I hate that!)

But maybe it is the best thing for him! To teach him more responsibility.

18. I've hidden leftovers that I knew I could stretch into another meal.
No sense in letting someone eat a "snack" that could go much farther.
I've also hidden key ingredients to a meal if I think someone will scarf it down.

20. Hide? Ha!
Seeing I eat less "manly" things such as an abundance of fruit, veggies and HFCS-free items, they sit around without being touched...
